I will be purchasing two subwoofers (my budget is $500 to $700 for each sub, not for both) for my home theater den which is approximately 19' x 16' x 8' (about 2500 cu ft). I want to use two subs to help smooth the in-room frequency response. I want to use balanced XLR inputs because my equipment rack will be on a side wall and the cable runs to the subwoofers will be up to 40 ft.
Size-wise I could go into the moderate area, say up to about 18" x 18" x 18" for the entire cabinet but a bit smaller than that would be better.
About 70 percent of my listening will be movies, sports, and general HDTV. About 30 percent will be surround sound music (DVD-A, SACD, BluRay).
I like the bottom end to be all there and have plenty of impact but I don't want it to run me out of the room or be boomy and unbalanced. Lower extension is more important to me than being able to play at 125db.
Appearance-wise I'm not overly picky. It doesn't need to be shiny, piano black but it can't look like a junior high school shop project either. Plain, flat black is fine.
I will probably be ready to purchase these subs sometime in June.
The other thought I had was to purchase subwoofers with RCA inputs and use a Whirlwind LM2U just before the subs to unbalance the signal.
Any suggestions for what I should check out is greatly appreciated.
