Yes, he did say that. And later on in the thread, after more discussion regarding various subwoofer options, he also said:

(Note: This was for a budget 2.1 system in my small home office, and would not meet your needs.)

I currently have the BIC F12 in my home theater. Have not heard any port noise so far, although I likely don't play at your volumes. For $187 I have no complaints. Some people claim the RW12d is better than the F12. Well, hopefully it is, considering it costs $100 or more compared to the F12. They are not in the same price class. I am actually glad that I did not spend a lot on the sub, because after reading through the DIY sub threads, I might down the road try my hand at building a sub, doesn't seem all that difficult and you can build to meet your needs.

if i were to build a sub, it would be 2 high excursion 18in car subs in a sealed box. prob running 2000watts rms each.biggrin.gif i would just need to worry about building the box strong enough for that type of power

ok fair enough, but the rw12 will not come close to 120db + output. however that would be my choice of sub for the price. i prefer a sub with a flat response from 20-80hz over max spl.

If you like listening at 120 db to 130 db, you won't be in this hobby for long. You will be deaf! Any ported sub will make port noise if pushed to hard.

lol very good point...I dont really care to listen much over 100db, 85-90db is pretty tolerable range. I think the op must be pretty young. No big deal, I was there at one time. I can remember my younger days when pushing my kicker 15's to 140db in my ext. cab pickup like it was yesterday. I had to wear hearing protection to listen to the subs, pretty stupid looking back imo. although back in the early- mid 90's that was the thing. 4-5 noise ordinance tickets later, I grew up and moved on lmao.

im 16, and i want my sub to go to 120db because i do listen that loud only sometimes. like 3 times a week. but if i have speakers that cant reach my listening level, they were not worth getting. often, i do concentrate on quality sound rather then volume. please dont think im one of those people who only wants volume. that is not the case. my hearing is not suffering yet

The RW-12d won't give you everything you're looking for, but it will be a HUGE step up from your 55-watt PSW10s, in terms of both extension and overall output.

I doubt you are playing at 120db. Have you confirmed that with an SPL meter?

If you somehow are, stop before you permanently damage your hearing.

No I gurantee he is not playing 120db...the psw10's would blow up before 105db. I have used that sub in my locations where I have touch tunes jukeboxes. Only reason why I use that sub because they are cheap, reliable, and have a decent warranty. if some drunk in a bar walks up and kicks in the sub, no biggie im only out 95 bucks. I focus the money towards the book shelf speakers mounted high up ont the walls and use cheap subs to fill the bottom end. in a loud enviroment nobody will hear the port noise or slight distortion at louder levels. Some might say use a commercial speaker with a power amp...yes thats a option but bookshelf/powered sub combinations sounds soooo much better in a bar/club enviroment opposed to big pro audio speakers with horns that scream.

if i want to turn it up, then the subs get turned off. if you dont believe cerwin vegas can reach 120db, then idk what to tell you. ive never pushed my sub to the point where i think it is going to blow up. my cerwin vega have been confirmed at 119.3db. i dont have a pic of it anymore, it was my moms friend who lent the SPL meter to me.

and also, id be willing to use a Pro audio sub. i was looking at an EV or JBL.

I said the subs...where in my post did I doubt your cerwin vegas?

I just hit 122db with my xv15's with a tad more headroom left...thats not factoring in the correction tables either. that was flatout 122db on the meter...roughly 127db @ 30hz with the correction factored in. smile.gif

no apology needed, your good!

If you want to hit those levels then you need the psa xv15's...probably hit close to 130db or more in a room your size. they going to set ya back some coin tho.

That is extremely loud and will shorten the longevity of this hobby for you due to deafness. All ported sub can have port noise when they are overdriven. A 15 in Premiere Acoustic sub is an output monster and will work well in that size room.

OSHA Daily Permissible Noise Level Exposure
Hours per day Sound level
8 90dB
6 92dB
4 95dB
3 97dB
2 100dB
1.5 102dB
1 105dB
.5 110dB
.25 or less 115dB

The .0.5 and 0.25 time limit exposure mean that your are damaging your hearing if you exceed the recommended exposure times.

agreed, I had ear plugs in when I tested. although I am sure my hearing is slightly damaged from my car audio days.

120 db is extremely loud and you should not be exposed to that high a sound level for more than 15 min. That volume will lead to severe hearing damage. The Premiere Acoustic PA 150 in near your price range. It is an output monster and can be brought for $300-400. All ported sub can have port noise if overdriven.

Careful with that axe, Eugene......

You WILL regret listening at those levels - I know, I know....we were all indestructible at 16 so I know you won't listen, but here's a link anyway:
