We often ask "what's the best sub" question on this forum, so I want to flip this question and see what kind of interesting responses we get.

Please share your experiences with one of these questions (or both!).

1) What's the worst sounding expensive subwoofer you've ever heard? Let's have the definition of expensive as at least $1000 MSRP.

2) What's the worst price/performance ratio subwoofer you've ever heard? (Please don't say Bose, as we all know about that)

3) What's the worst large subwoofer you've ever heard?. Let's have the definition of large as a subwoofer that is at least 20'' in any of the 3 dimensions.

As for number 2.. I would have to say a DIY project that I just couldn't get together. I dunno, it had no impact and nothing went rite. Putting the oak on was a bad idea, should of just left it black.

I haven't heard one but I feel like this Martin Logan sub would be a really bad value. $3,500 seems like a lot to pay for what you get.

I had a Martin Logan Descent in my theater on trial for a week. It is an excellent sub with very strong output and excellent sound quality. I would agree that there are better values in subwoofers, but that sub does not belong in a thread with this title.

The worst price:performance sub I've heard of is this one:
- 2 x 15" drivers
- 500W (continuous) amp
- 18-100Hz +/-3dB
- $17,500 USD

I have never heard a bad sounding expensive sub just quite a few that I could not justify dollar to performance ratio.
On the flip side I have heard quite a few cheap subs that should have been labeled mid bass module because there really was no sub bass.

Why wouldn't it? Any sub can be in this thread based on the title. The title is the worst expensive sub you've heard. It's not asking for the worst sub, just the worst expensive sub you've heard. If there was a definitive list of the ten best subs at any price, number ten would still be considered the worst of the best.

As for me, the worst expensive sub I've ever heard was the Revel B15a at $3K MSRP. It's still a very good sub, but it's the worst expensive sub I've heard.

one of the lowest value subs I've ever heard is the lowest polk sub PSW10 http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-10-Inch-Monitor-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA It just baffles me how it has 1028 reviews and maintains 4.5 stars on amazon. It's -3 dB on the low end is 40 hz... haha

It's simple, the reviewers have never heard/owned a real sub.

Because its only a $100 subwoofer, what more to you expect. Axiom's EP125 was just reviewed by Hometheater and it has a -3db at 47hrz and its $400 eek.gif The Polk is one of the go to entry level subwoofers out side of HTIB or soundbars. Value wise I think its pretty good since it goes on sale for under $100 sometimes.

The worst value subwoofer(s) IMO is just about anything from Axiom. EP600 comes to mind. Really its barely a SVS PB12 NSD performer at SVS Ultra price. Ilkka tested it some years ago and it performed so bad its first go around it had to be retested and still was pretty bad.
http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/subwoofer-tests-archived/6002-axiom-ep-600-1st-test.html

Some of the negatives:
- High distortion at all frequencies
- High power compression
- High group delay and slow decay rate at low frequencies
- Somewhat weak enclosure

Horrible for a close to $2k subwoofer. Why anyone would pick it over SVS Ultra, SVS PB12 Plus, HSU VTF 15H, Rythmik, ect.... Is beyond me.

Yup, my first Axiom EP400 was such a bad value that I recently had to prolong my agony by purchasing a second one just to convince myself that I had made a such a grave error.

Actually, the EP400 is a stunning performer especially given its small size - powerful, articulate & oh so musical. They are even doubly good as a pair & sound like a million bucks to me...

For both the categories, Def Tech SC Ref topped the list for me. It is one of the most bizarre subs in terms of price ($1900), performance (should be called more of a resonator than a sub), -3dB point close to 40Hz i.e. measured an inch from the center of cone mad.gif

One thing I can safely and confidently say about Def Tech company as a whole is either they post false reviews themselves as regards their subwoofer lineup OR the buyers have never heard any quality sub ever in their life. But knowing how grossly Def Tech lies about specs esp for subwoofers; I think the former is 100% true.

worst value sub I've ever heard personally a DD-10 2k for that sub. No thank you. Also it seemed to be hard to ingrate into a system. It just didn't sound right.

And now that ID offerings are so strong The klpisch THX Ultra 2 sub woofers and amp combo is really overpriced at 4.5K. Their very impressive for retail subs. But you get so much value with ID there is no reason to go that route. .

Oh and the worst sounding,. The sub from the Onkyo HTIB's. The new one has only an auto on feature. That doesn't work have the time and the sub bass output is just awful rumble with no definition. But to be fair many of the low end subs you get at retail don't sound any better just louder.

$2K for a pair of 8" sealed subwoofers isn't exactly value. Considering I could get four SVS SB12 NSDs, two HSU ULS 15s, two Power Sound Audio XS30s, two Rythmik F12s.

it may be a decent sub, but based on the BB site of the warranty specs only is about as pathetic as you can get.

BB says 90 days because that's "automatic" if you don't register the sub.

Automatic Coverage
Thank you for purchasing this MartinLogan product. We have made every effort to ensure that it represents the highest level of performance, reliability and finish. Your MartinLogan product is covered by a Limited Ninety Day Warranty. This ninety day coverage is automatic upon your acceptance of delivery and no registration is required.

But Martin Logan offers a 3-year factory warranty, provided you register the sub:

So that would supersede anything BB would offer.

Having heard both the Gotham and the 1812, I agree they were poor value choices but, the construction quality (fit and finish) of both of those subs was amazing. I came very close to buying a dealer demo ($15K MSRP) 1812 for $5K. I was caught up in the what a great deal aspect but when I actually heard it, it fell short on performance even at that price point.

Still, they make for an interesting looking piece of kit. smile.gif

My twin Axiom EP400s represented great value to me considering their outstanding performance for music, subjectively speaking of course.

As has been said here many times before, value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder...
