Nice! Tradeoffs of course, but it's nice to have a tuning option. That's one advantage to slot vents...you can just do a partial plug of a vent and wedge it in there, as opposed to a port. You guys with "Marty Subs" or slotted vents should give it a try and see how you like a lower tune...

Looking forward to see if that ups your ULF experience even more!

Did you ever figure out if you have a sealed or ported IB?

Wait for it, wait for it...

Here comes the "Marty Plug"!

"ULF Plug" maybe?

Here's a small business idea for you Entrepreneurs...start making these ULF plugs for commercial ported subs, with new estimated sims, tuning, etc. and sell them!

Probably no warranty service if something goes wrong, but would be a cheap way to test out a lower tune for the curious and careful...

Nice upgrade! Massive at 16hz; 5.6 SI to 12.4!

Big question...can you tell a difference in ULF?
There is a huge difference in the effect in the HT. You can feel the wave of wind in the room and the LFE is off the hook. The two SS 18.1 are stacked in a rear corner and the SS 18.2 is behind the seating area on the other rear side. The two VS 18.1's are in the front so they fire right into the main seating area. These subs mate well with the I Nuke amps.

I could not be happier for a fairly easy project. Use the old boxes with new drivers. I loved the VS 18.1's before but, with the Ultimax in that big vented box, wow. It would be interesting to know what effect the VS 18.1's have on the 10 and 12 Hz SI score with the lower tune. It is interesting the when I calibrated the system today with a FR, the is the bump between 12 and 16 Hz as you SI scores reflect. You numbers are very good!

Great to hear. Surely much more capable then your prior drivers!

I'm guessing you'll probably have usable in-room output from the VS' down to 12.5hz. The ULF calculator doesn't take in-room response below port tune into consideration...I tried to make it a conservative estimate, and anything beyond that is gravy.

Your upgrade was around 1500 and change? Comparing what you could have gotten for 1500 commercially vs just upgrading your drivers like you did...you definitely made the right choice!

Based on my old close mic graphs they were sealed to begin with. The frequencies match which mean I have about a 6-7 hz tune but more output. I don't remember what level I used or settings to generate that sealed raw response but if i know I had to turn down the ported much more(over 10dbs at 10 hz) to get to the correct levels compared to the sealed. The back subs will be tuned to 11.5 hz so I am curious how they will measure in comparison. 15 feet away versus 4 inches! The 4 SI's won't have to play as hard to keep up, minus 9 dBs from half the drivers and less SPL but add SPL for no loss from distance.

The vented boxes bring so much more in output compared to getting two more sealed boxes in a very large room. I like the combination. Good LFE and lots of slam. I did have to get longer screws to mount the driver to the existing baffle.

More output only near or around the tune. I tuned very low because a high tune would create a huge peak like my DTS-10's had.

Very impressive...
Ha! You got me..

I'll be sure to snap a pic after the PJ and AT screen get wedged in here.. somehow..

Room dims are 13.5L x 8.5W x 8H with angled ceilings on both of the width walls.. totalling 76.5cf, so subtract that from the 918cf and you get 841.5cf. To be honest, the room is actually smaller than that.. only has 90" ceilings in the center.. but it's easier to calculate this way.

Also, I had an FR graph for my 5hz score but it seemed to have disappeared with the AVS switch.. I'll have to grab another from REW. Thanks again

BTW guys, It's domiguez1's fault I am adding anything. He convinced me how cool it would be to have near field subs behind me, I just wanted surround stands. I get home tonight and will take pics of the SI's next to the IB3-18's.

Guilty as charged.

I'm guessing you're going to love it though...

PVL > SPL

Where's the pics?!?

Agreed! Part of the reason why I think my subs work well in my room is due to the nearfield placement. It's like having 15" transducers under the seats.

+3 on pics of MK's NF setup or vote ban.

From and SPL/Pressure standpoint...ummm, no.

But from a PVL/Tactile feeling standpoint, the nearfield ported subs would kick it up a notch I would think! I'm guessing this nearfield/riser move is going to give you the best of both worlds!

Yeah, just around tune though and they are inches away when finished. The kids are watching Frozen down there right now and when they go to bed I will open the boxes and take pics. I am thinking of just running the two subs right into my clone as this will give my amp a 4 ohm load.

It will be more than 4 inches unless your ear is right next to / inside the basket Once you account for the z-axis it is more like 2-3ft. That is still a 13db gain,
BUT the response will be near-field and thus dropping off like I rock below 30hz (most likely).

Kids have been going to bed so late I have been falling asleep. They are up now! I have to go to buffalo tomorrow too. I don't want to open the boxes until I know I will install them due to the boy. I think I am going to install one driver on each side, forward and side firing, with the port on the front driver side. The other option is to install the drivers on one side(front) and then the port sideways.
