From the reviews I've been able to find, this was a pretty well-regarded sub. Think $200 is a fair price?

One thing about it ... it is UGLY. Could I cover the front (believe it is front firing) with some speaker fabric or some such to hide its hideousness?

EDIT: Never mind the second question. Guess it does come with a grill. But it is still ugly.

Funny, I think the S12.3 - like its smaller (and pretty impressive) sibling, the S10.3 - is a good-looking sub.

If it's in very good (or better) cosmetic condition and 100% working order, I'd pay $200 for it. Hell, I'd pay $200 for an S10.3.

Hey thanks for responding!

It looks better with the grill, that's for sure, but even with the grill on it still has that weird white badge-looking thing in the front (which I assume is the power button?) I prefer my subs to be seen, not heard, and an all black sub is the best way to do this ... that white button floating on the black front looks odd to me.

Guy selling the sub says it is in storage and not set up to demo. Does he really think anyone will buy it without testing it?

That's the volume knob. The off/auto/on switch is on the plate amp in back. (Link to S*.3 owner's manual.)

If you don't like the colour of the volume knob, you probably won't like the blue light, either. eek.gif But it's nothing that some black tape can't fix. smile.gif

I sure wouldn't buy it without a proper demo!

Great sub for $200!! I had a Mirage S12 which is the same subwoofer for the most part and it was a monster for its size.

Tell me about it! Here's how our email conversation went:

Hey, I'd like to check out that sub. Let me know when I might be able to see it. Do you have it set up in a HT?

in storage, not set up

Does that mean I cant test it before buying?

Can have plugged in to verify function

That doesn't actually verify that it functions. It just means that it will power on. You have to be able to run sound through it to verify that it functions.

Plugged in means powered on and hooked to a source

Sorry I misunderstood. What is the source?

He hasn't responded to tell me what the source will be yet. Do you think I could bring my laptop and run a splitter cable from the sound out to the sub? Would that work as a test? My laptop has a blue-ray drive ...

Buddy sure is a minimalist when it comes to providing information!

Laptop or even an MP3 player hooked up to the sub should work fine.

He isn't the verbose type, is he. Maybe he's texting or ESL or something?

So I should track down some bass test tracks to put on the laptop, no? Any suggestions?

Search the site for something like "subwoofer demo music". Here are a few older threads with song suggestions:
- Subwoofer songs - recommendation of the day!
- Need songs with really low bass?
- Subwoofer Music

Thanks canuck!

This craigslist seller gets an "A" in salesmanship.

Here's our latest exchange, in its totality.

Me:

I think I'll bring my laptop with me to demo that sub. What would be a good time for me to come and see it?

Him:

not today.

Why do I get the feeling he's trying NOT to sell me his subwoofer?

Might be selling it for someone else, or maybe it wasn't his and he doesn't know much about it.

But that S12.3 is a heck of a sub. I'd bet you'd probably have to spend $500 or more to better it with a new sub. Be sure to offer less if you decide to buy. Given that he doesn't seem to like to want to communicate about this, might be ready to get it out of his hair for $175. smile.gif

Jeez, could a guy be any MORE unhelpful? What would it have cost him to say something like "tomorrow @ 6pm"?

Like others have said he might have folks linedup to checkout that sub. $200 is a bargain if its in good working condition. An omni s12 sold on eBay for about $82 shipped.....still kicking myself for forgetting to bid. Offer him less money first and goodluck

His ad says $200 "FIRM". He claims the sub is in good working condition but that the removable cloth grill has some tears in it ...

FIRM doesn't mean he won't take $20 or $30 less when you are standing there in front of him smile.gif

IMO, "firm" should mean "firm", but there's no harm in haggling if you're a serious about making the buy.

If the torn grille doesn't bother you, $200 is still a good price on a 100% functional S12.3. If you can get it for less, more power to you. smile.gif

Okay, I might finally get a look at this thing tomorrow.

Anything in particular I should check for, and if so, any advice on how I go about doing it?

I would start by visually inspecting the driver's cone and surround for damage (cracks, tears, etc.), and then powering up the sub and listening closely for any loud hums or buzzing from the amp. Twist knobs and flip switches to make sure the contacts are good (no crackling or popping sounds).

Connect an audio source. Flip the "X-OVER MODE" switch to "A" - which engages the crossover (actually a low-pass filter (LPF)) - and play some music. Twist the "CROSSOVER" knob to test whether or not the control is working. Then flip the "X-OVER MODE" switch to "B" (which disables the LPF) and continue playing.

If the sub sounds "boomy", try moving it to a different spot to make sure the boominess isn't just a result of placement. (For example, corner placement can accentuate boominess.)

If the subs plays cleanly - at various volume levels and with different content (music, movie audio, etc.) - and sounds "tight" / articulate to you, you're probably alright to go ahead and buy it.

Good luck, and happy shopping! smile.gif

Thanks, canuck!

Here's my latest exchange with Mr. Informative.

ME:
What source you were planning to run, if any?

HIM:
whatever sound output is handy

It's like he just broke into someone's house and hasn't made a full inventory of the real owner's possessions yet, so he doesn't know what audio sources will be available ...

Sounds like he doesn't want to be bothered with discussing it all by email. I've sold quite a few things on CL. It can get to be a lot of hassle having to respond to queries that want to ask a lot of questions through several exchanges, but never end up buying.

Let us know what you find out. Be sure to ask him when it was purchased. If he doesn't know, that sub could easily be about 10 years old. Point that out to him, and say you would be concerned about what to do if the amp fails. Good haggling point wink.gif

Hey, T.C., what's the word on that sub? Is it still in the running, or has the vendor done his best to discourage you from buying it?

I have an s12.3 and dual s10.3's. They are really nice subwoofers. I leave the grills off. The 12.3 goes a little deeper than the s10.3 but they are all really tight and sound great.

Worth $200 + IMHO.
