My stepfather is building a home theater in his basement. He already has the speakers all selected, and is using a 70" HDTV. He isn't sure yet about the sub. As you can see from the pics, the sub is going in an adjacent closet to be kept out of sight. What you can't see in the pics though is that there is a little dog-door-sized opening between the closet and the room. I personally have a Rythmik LV12R in my apartment that I really like, but I'm not sure if it would be sufficient here. I've used a HSU sub before, and it also sounded really good. Would a VF3 MK4 be a good fit? Any other thoughts on the setup?

Let me start by getting the obvious point out of the way first: no sub is going to sound good if it gets stuck in a closet.

I see, that's what I figured...What if it were a front-firing sub and was brought right up to the opening in the closet wall?

Might be better to just talk him out of the closet. He's building an HT room, right? Tell him that showing off your great sub (making it visible) is part of having an HT setup. And if he's not restricted to the size of that cubby in the closet, he can get a sub that will really impress people smile.gif

Well...my Mom doesn't want to have to see it (even though I don't think she's ever seen one at all before). Female aversion to subwoofers seems to be a recurring theme on this forum...Which is why I feel it's better to build one's home theater BEFORE starting a relationship smile.gif

In my case I literally built everything...but anyway, I do think there are a few spots in the room where it could be discretely placed, but they'll have to work out if whether they want to go the visible route. Their A/V guy says they'll use this special sound-conducing thin white fabric on the floor to help the bass leave the closet, or something. It sounds a little hokey, but then I've never heard of that at all before, so who knows? I'll try to get my Stepfather to join in on this thread...

As far as that room's size goes though, can anyone recommend a particular sub? Or wattage?

I disagree...I had a Diy 15" bandpass sub that sounded amazing placed in a closet and had significant more output then being placed in the room. Years ago back when I still lived with my parents, my dad had a Martin logan electrostatic setup with a paradigm reference 12" sub. We moved it from out in the room to the closet behind the main speakers and it was a night and day difference. A friend of mine also did the same thing with a psw505 and had great results. Not saying this will work in every situation but it can be worth a shot if placement is limited.

Interesting...So I think we should get the sub first, then figure out the placement.

I think you should get an XV30. Then your stepdad can tell your mom it's too big to ship back--158lbs eek.gifbiggrin.gif

Eaxctly...the best thing to do is try all placement options. Let the sub decide where it should be placed. smile.gif
