Hi i am trying to get my sub woofer going but am having a little trouble. Reciever is a Yamaha 5950 and sub is from a set of speakers given to me from a friend. Any help would be really appreciated.

That is a passive (unpowered) subwoofer. It was likely powered by the receiver of the HTiB (home theater in a box) it originally came with.

For your purposes, you'll need to purchase a separate subwoofer amplifier (example, from

Alternatively, you could dump that sub and buy an active (powered) sub, which you would connect to your receiver's subwoofer output.

You could buy a small sub amp for that to make it work... but you could do better and cheaper in the long run by just buying a used POWERED subwoofer or get a new budget Powered subwoofer. Used Jbl, M&K, Polk, Klipsh, KEF can be had for less than $100 at Craigslist if your patient enough.
