Haha, yeah getting your new gear in the room is priority #1!!

That reminds me... when a buddy and I built a riser for my second row couch we built it in the garage and when it cam time to move it down to the basement it was about an inch too big! It's one of those things where you don't know if you're more mad or embarrassed.

It's been my experience that, when dealing with the plethora of really good (SVS pc) to world class (PSA triax) subs, carp is 100% right. Your old sub likely didn't create a lot of distortion during normal playback unless you were severely overdriving it and, even then, SVS makes some pretty bulletproof stuff, so that wouldn't be my first inclination.

Rather, I'd think you're hearing peaky frequency responses. Loud peaks make a much larger impression on us than the levels of distortion you could likely see from that old SVS sub. We train ourselves to like peaky frequency response over time, as our ear-->brain connection is wired such that louder almost always sounds "better," "fuller," or "more," especially when it comes to bass frequencies.

I suspect that a lot of people experience this, simply because they have taught themselves to think of it in this way by upgrading, not EQ'ing flat, and automatically equating the new higher dollar sound with better sound - which may not always be the case. We always want our upgrades to be upgrades, right? Once you get used to a particular response, that becomes your expectation.

If you EQ flat and level/gain matched to your other speakers, it will sound weird (and probably not good) for a while. It takes a fair amount of time to retrain the brain to hear the nuances of a flat frequency response. However, I guarantee it's worth it!

Also, on a related side note, I wouldn't trust any receiver's room correction software to actually get it right without unsmoothed REW graphs that verify it as such.

I appreciate the feedback. smile.gif

I'll have a better idea what's going on once I take some measurements and compare them with the SVS measurements.

It's probably worth noting that my 16-46PC+ was built before the days of DSP being used in the PC subs. The only protection the driver has is a high pass filter to roll off frequencies below the tuning point (16hz). Also, for reference, my space is about 5500 ft3.

This is the best post I've seen all day. Very nicely put and oh how true imo.

Hey sat, back in the day as you remember we also had CS+'s with no hp. I got very used to knowing my subs limits and carry that on to this day. Usually over build with no need.

Ah, down should be easier. Perhaps you could put something under it to allow you to slide it down the stairs. Looking at this thing it seems like it would be very awkward trying to carry it. Be careful, that thing would be dangerous if dropped!

+1

I also got to know the limits of my PC sub and adjusted accordingly. It seems with the Triax my limits are met before it's! Of course should I ever hit the Triax's limits it's built in protections will prevent damage (well, maybe not damage to me and my house).

Speaking of which, Tom mention this to me concerning the clipping light;

...One note/change we need to make on the manual----if you see the yellow clip light illuminate at loud/very loud levels that is no concern at all. It isn't actually "clipping" It is just letting you know you'll be bumping up against the max output capabilities if the volume keeps getting bumped. You won't hurt anything, so blast it as loud as you can stand.. smile.gif ...

Just put it on the cardboard, and ride it like a toboggan down the stairs, like when I was a kid, we'd steal my buddies parents patio furniture cushions and ride them down the stairs :P

No i didnt order the XBone, or PS4, Ive been a hardcore PC gamer for about 15 years, I couldnt hit the broadside of a battleship with a controller, I need mouse and KB for FPS games. I do have a couple PS3's, and an xbox360, but dont use them much anymore. biggrin.gif

no he doesn't have them yet, I was down at his place 2 weeks ago, carted down my DIY SEOS speakers, he liked them but i don't think anything is going to convince him to not get the JTRs

All he has to do is sneak them in and disguise them somehow, I'm sure he wife wouldn't notice biggrin.gif well if she did then that would suck eek.gif he could put some Bose stickers on them and be like, " see honey, they're just harmless Bose, I'm trying to downgrade now so don't worry"

the same vintage as my Snell Type A's. I did have them modded/upgraded 15 or so years ago but they still sound fantastic, a steal when I picked them up used in 1982 for $1300.

This is an old pic, that entertainment center and TV have since been replaced with a 59" plasma

I have a Denon 4311ci running 11.2, it uses the Audyssey XT32. I have 1 Triax now and a second one coming in a couple weeks. The subs are in the back corners, this is the only place they can go and my sectional couch only has one spot to go in. I do not have any measuring devices or programs beside the XT32. Given my set positions for subs and listening position is there any benefit for me to invest in other calibration equipment? Thanks for any advice.
