Might sound a little funky, but sub design is like a teeter-totter to a degree.

Design tradeoffs...depends on room, budget, and goals.

I'll be looking at two subs, one placed nearfield, in a 3,300^3 room so my expectations are, reference capability at 12.5Hz and usable output to 10Hz. I don't expect any port noise trouble as our normal listening volume is -30dB to -20dB MCV. Our budget, at best would allow for a single Triax and then I'd have to deal with the finicky nature of room acoustics and do so with a single subwoofer. In the case of sealed, I'm dealing with needing three or four XS30s and a lack of room and budget. Now I have a serious conundrum and nothing I've been looking at fits the ideal compromise. If I've learned anything, there are intrinsic details we all have to deal with and some are immutable so in the end, everything becomes a compromise.

Due to your ULF thread, it shows many subwoofers in their element and allows for various combinations to be easily compared, room to room. And based on what basshead81 shared and what your thread made perfectly clear, my choice in subwoofers became what I consider to be the ultimate "compromise" for our room acoustics. Other than the normal nervousness of hitting the send button, you have no idea how happy I am to have finally made a choice I can feel good about.

I have now calibrated it with the 4520, and it sounds great! I bumped up the bass on the sub from -8 to 0, and now when I watch TV shows I can hear the bass on them too. I never realized that tv shows had bass too, especially as to how deep they go... I have my La Scalas set to crossover @ 80, and the sub to crossover @120. The Denon required me to set the sub level to -8, so I let it and then raised it up to 0 when I was finished. When the Denon was @ -8 it sounded real good but now it sounds great! Boy, what a change this is from listening to the old KLH for 10 years!

The bass is very deep and powerful! The first movie I put on was WWZ. I was not able to crank it up as everyone was home, but @ -20 it was sounding pretty good. My next movie up (for demo) was Tron... The bass on it is unreal, and that was @ -20 also!
I also received my minidsp mic today, so hopefully I can run REW in the next few days and see how it looks. I only have 1 place that the sub can go currently so not much I can do about getting it flat, but someday I will have a garage converted to a HT, and then I will be able to do the sub crawl and get the sub optimized.

All I can say is that even with a non room optimized sub it still sounds great!

If you can get up the scratch to afford this sub you will not be disappointed!

It's not your house or wiring. I actually had two 20 amp dedicated circuits ran into my living room. One was for triax and it still hummed. I had to use the cheater plug and it's dead silent. Electrician said it had to be something in the ground circuit of the amp. I am having no issues with the sub though. I played a 50-60 hz youtube video last night and stopped at 130db. That was seriously loud.

Yeah it does add up to some serious $$$ bills. I promised myself to stop where im at with my setup but after getting my Triax I was blown away and im making an usual exception by getting a 2nd one. The way im justifying this is that id be using $2,000 from selling my Trinity in my paypal account and just adding the small additional amount from my pocket so in reality it wouldnt effect any of my financial plans. After this 2nd one gets here ill start next year fresh and work on other plans while I can just spend the new year enjoying what I have. I could still be tempted to swap out my ht speakers and step them up but honestly the setup sounds great so id rather just save for a future build. I see other dream setups online and start getting anxious but i know that the sooner I start saving the sooner I can go all out the right way. Hey theres alaways income tax return for a Triax biggrin.gif

So I'm drooling over the Triax right.. and right now, I have a little BIC PL-200.. and although it tries very hard to aspire to greatness and has served me well, I'm ready for an upgrade.

I currently have a Marantz SR6007, with Audyssey MutlEQ XT. And I saw a few things in this thread mentioning properly EQ'ing the sub, so if I could just get an answer in summary:
With a Triax, would I need to have better than XT to EQ it?? How are you guys going about it? I would prefer not to upgrade my receiver if I can help it, and just enjoy sweet, glorious bass.

Thanks!

I think youd get great results with just what you have, just one Triax has filled in any dips I had before. How flat is it with just Audyssey? Im not sure but to my ears im getting insane output with my entire low range of frequencies and its way more than enough to bring movies and music to life. Id say dont worry about your receiver, you should get very good results and if worst came to worse you could always do some tweaks with a mini dsp so youd be fine. How big is your room? What kind of openings go into it?

With a Triax, would I need to have better than XT to EQ it?? How are you guys going about it? I would prefer not to upgrade my receiver if I can help it, and just enjoy sweet, glorious bass.

Thanks!
Going from the Bic to the Triax is such an incredible upgrade, I think you will be more than fine with XT. If you are unhappy with the response then you have some options but I have a feeling you will be more worried about piecing together your house after the Triax has damaged it rather than worrying if you are getting an even response wink.gif

No idea how flat actually. I have the SPL meter from Radioshack, but no way to measure different frequencies, just a single test tone.
My room is 14x10, so fairly small. And its a bedroom, just one door. With an gap above the door(for heat dispersion, the house is very old).
I know the Triax is really more than enough for my room, but I wanted a long term investment, a sub I could be satisfied with for 5+years, and in a much larger room.

I know! The BIC is like the budget sub, and this is gonna be insane!!!

Good to hear, that's nice to know!

Is there anything to use that have a range of low frequencies to test my subs response? Like a 5-120hz Blu-ray test disc or anything??
