Right on the money carp. I did the same thing with my subs. After I got a decent FR moving the subs around. Then I started to change the distance of the subs in the AVR to get a smoother FR.

I wanted something that was a Type II for accuracy but the digital Radio Shack sound meter is the de facto forum standard so there's no reason to believe you're not golden.

If you're going to order a measurement Mic for REW, get THIS one instead

http://cross-spectrum.com/measurement/calibrated_umm6.html

It's individually calibrated AND includes a 90-degree calibration file, which is important when you begin measuring the speakers as well and not just the subs.

They don't give me an option to ship fast, if I get the other one is it hard to get calibrated?

They are the same microphone, but Herb takes each individual microphone and specifically calibrates it against a known mic and source and generates individual correction tables that he provides with each mic. You can actually get the UMM-6 from Parts Express if you want to get it immediately, then at a later date, I think you could send it to Herb at Cross-Spectrum Labs to get him to measure it and generate the calibrated individual correction tables.

No. In the measuring microphone packaging, is a number. The buyer goes online to their website listed on the directions. A numeric code is entered and you're able to download the calibration file that can easily be entered into REW.

From the product details section of the above link I posted:

Calibration Note: A unique serialized calibration file is available for the UMM-6. This calibration file can be used by most audio-analysis software. To obtain your individual calibration file, visit Dayton Audio's website where you will be prompted to enter the serial number from the body of your UMM-6. After entering the serial number, your download will start.

I have a feeling this might be addicting biggrin.gif so far I got,

1# windows laptop
2# USB mic
3# SPL meter

Any other surprises I might need? Lol. I saw something about an adapter. So the USB goes into the laptop, what goes into the receiver?

One needs to be able to connect the microphone out of the computer with the RCA stereo in on the faceplate of the AVR so the frequency sweep can be played through the subwoofers.

This is the cable I use.

The USB microphone should come with a USB cable. My understanding, the cable can be up to fifteen feet.

Despite what it says, the generic UMM-6's come with a generalized calibration file (i.e. like the standard Audyssey mics, they measured a bunch of them and came up with an average correction table for all mics). The serial number simply gets you the generic correction file for the type of mic. In addition to that, the generic correction file is for 0-degrees (which is fine for subs). If you want to start using REW to measure the speakers too, you'll want to have the mic pointing at the ceiling which is where the 90-degree grazing incidence calibration/correction file comes in handy (not part of the generic Dayton correction files).

If you want to double check and confirm if the calibration files from Dayton actually ARE individualized for each individual microphone, when BMK gets his microphone, he can post up the correction file he gets with his serial number and see if it differs from yours. If it does, then they ARE individualized, if they're the same, then it's a generic file. That still doesn't change the fact that Dayton doesn't provide a 90-degree cal file though.

Thanks, I'll start reading everything over and try to retain as much as I can. I saw some cool youtube videos on how to work the REW, I like them.

I then set both sub trims to the mean of the two which is -7.5db and then eventually set them both to -1.5 to run them 6db hotter. I am missing some mid bass punch in these positions which is why I am planning to move my right sub upfront to the right back corner. Is the closer sub localize since it is much closer to you? I believe Archaea said he could not locate your rear sub when he was at your place but want to check with you. Thanks.

Hey Tony, it was great meeting you tonight. Learned a lot about my 4311 and REW that I didn't know. It is always nice to meet someone with a passion for HT as I really personally know anyone who shares the same interest.

Also thanks for getting me to play my subs like they were meant to be played. I got to admit I was nervous during a few of those scenes at first, but it was fun!

Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to try out the gain matching this weekend and see how it compares to some of my previous measurements.

^^ Ray, thanks for allowing a stranger to your place. I always have a very good time when there is BASS- good deep and LOUD BASS that is smile.gif

Here is two of the three subs at Ray's place. Warning: Objects in person are bigger than they appear. Enuff said smile.gif
