A guy is selling a Dayton RS1200 K that s about 5 years old. It has a 12" Dayton Refrence series sub with their 500 watt amp. It is a sealed design.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-742

Dayton Reference Series legendary ultra-low-distortion subwoofer
Adjustable volume, crossover frequency, bandwidth and more
Clean, detailed bass down to 25 Hz
The perfect project for the audio enthusiast in you!
Dimensions: 17" W x 17" H x 17-1/4" D

What is this sub comparable to? Is it in the same league as SVS' sealed 12" offerings?

The guy is asking a fair price for the unit. I had my eye on the PSA XV15 because I have a large open room that I use for my theater. I would not even be interested int the sub, except it has a decent price, and I am itching to get something. I currently have no sub.

It doesn't dig particularly deep, probably better specs on the PSA and SVS offerings. Good quality sub in any case, well, if the guy built the kit properly I suppose....close enough to go get a demo?

Ozzie that sub would be comparable to the SB12, possibly a bit more mid bass output. 5 years is slightly long in the tooth for an amp though. I think if the price is right, go for it.

$150 sounds like a good deal as long as it's in good order. You wouldn't mind giving up some extension for now over waiting for another sub?

I see it has helping the time pass buy as I save the $$$ for some real extension. Life always seems to sneak up and put off my purchase.

Plus with all the filtering going on these days with blurays all I need is 30hz anyways wink.gif

Since obviously having a sub beats heck outta not having a sub, I think you should go for it! Hopefully it's worth the drive....I'd still confirm it is as advertised; there are lesser subs from Parts Express....

That is a good price for that sub. However I think the reference driver might have underwent some changes in the last 5 years so it might not be quite the same as the current RS1200. I would get it, at that price it is practically disposable, and it is using a decent driver.

Yeah but you say your room is open. How big is the space? $150 for a small sealed sub in a large open space is still money wasted regardless of the deal IMO.

Pretty open. Total area space is open to is about 4000 cubic feet. Plan was nearfield placement. I have no intention of ever pressurizing this space.

Too big for one small sealed sub IMO. Even near field. You'll get zero room gain.

I guess I will pass on this one. I do agree it seems like the price is right, just doesn't suit my needs. $150 saved is $150 earned right smile.gif

Just what does suit your needs aside from several large subs? smile.gif

No joke. My plan is PSA XV15, and add as $$$ allows, or when I build another house be smart and add a theater room. I know the 12" is not enough, and when I do add a ported sub they will not blend well.

Your point is well taken. Something vs. Nothing is an improvement, and hoping for AVS levels of subwooferage requires multiple large subs (larger than XV15's for sure) in my space.
