All,

I am building a new house and am trying to design my surround sound system. Room is 20' x 25' with 9' ceilings. It also opens into to wide hallways of 11' and 4' (see attached drawing).

I am on a tight budget of $500-600. The system will be used 85% for movies.

My initial thoughts based on some readings was to go with something like the SVS PB-1000. If I went that route would the sealed or ported SVS be better for my usage/room?

I would like to hear your thoughts. I do quite a bit of woodworking and am open to a DIY sub as well. I know Rythmik offers DIY plans for their drivers/amps.

I will be getting a X.2 receivers, so if my budget is too tight now, I can add an additional sub down the line.

Thanks!

$500~600 for the sub, or all speakers?
Some might say a ported sub for that size room, but a quality sealed sub is what I always prefer. Only lose maybe 4~5db.

That is a very large space you're dealing with. You should plan on adding a second sub at some point.

Options (one now, another one later on) include:
- SVS PB-1000 ($499, shipped, with free return shipping within 45 days)
- Rythmik LV12R ($589, not sure if that includes shipping)
- HSU VTF-2 MK4 (currently on sale for $529 + $67 shipping)
