I think you're referring to the screws right around the speaker surround, yes? The material of the surround itself actually extends right to where the screws go in, and I discussed this with Jeremy just after I unboxed them. Basically the material can get a little warped around the screws, but it absolutely doesn't affect sound quality. There is some sawdust type stuff around the speaker edge that seems to have gotten stuck perhaps to the paint or some glue, not sure. It's only visible close up and iI never notice it since I just keep the grills on and both drivers are facing a wall. I'll never see it.

I liked the finish on the XS30's and I still see my old subs all the time!...lol
But they were in my dark theater room, so the finish never really bothered me. If I had then in my living room I would have looked at getting a veneer. I haven't gotten my CX-8 surrounds speakers yet so I can't comment on how the finishes directly compare but will once I have them in hand.

Like I said before, I can see why Tom uses that finish it's perfect for hiding any imperfection, even if it's costly which I'm sure it is....lol
And of course the beauty of a veneer is you can hide imperfections too.

Even with the black industrial finish on my JTR speakers you can still see the seems on the tops of the cabinets, its very hard to get away from that. But its the same thing with FattyMcButterPants comment, the minute you step a foot or two away you can't notice it so why sweat it. And my JTR's weren't cheap speakers!...lol and they're made from very expensive Baltic birch too.

No problem man No worries though, I am in the same boat as you for the CX-8's, can't wait until they show up!

As to the question of the finish, I suspect much of this will come down to personal preference, so instead of offering up thoughts I figured I would post a picture as I have both finishes stacked on top of each other in my living room as we speak.

Hopefully this is helpful and I am not shunned from society for posting speaker pics in the subwoofer forum, or even worse, posting PSA pics in the Reaction thread!

From the pictures it is actually difficult to see very many differences in them. I can tell there is a little texture on the subs, but other than that they both look great!

Haha I know right. Even though the post the dimensions online I always find myself surprised when I receive them.

Thanks! The differences are pretty apparent up close and under the right light. I opened all the windows for those pics to get the natural light hitting them, and tried to do a few different angles to help illustrate the differences as best I can. At the end of the day black is black, and from more than two feet away they look more similar than different.

That being said, my preference does go towards the PSA finish because it masks all imperfections, looks flawless no matter how close I get or what light hits it, and is incredible durable. But I can see other people preferring the satin black finish from Reaction, it's really nice too!

There may be a little imperfection there, as it is not as usually very visible ( a fraction of an inch around the driver flange?) way inside the recess but other than that I don't see it?
I think the driver flange is maybe 1/4 inch too narrow that after you screw on the driver, the finish of the driver flange is compromised?

Other than that, the finish of the cabinet is fine.

So i received my subwoofer a few weeks ago. Unfortunately due to long work hours and car issues i had to delay testing the unit. Also my receiver took a dump on me yesterday, so i hooked up my old class A preamp, PS Audio 100C for my Theos. From what i am aware of, this is the first gloss black subwoofer from Reaction Audio and the first one with the external amplifier (PE SA1000). Using 8AWG speaker wire from knukonceptz and didn't mess with the settings just set the crossover and the gains. Performance was quite good (only tested music). The subwoofer does shake the entire house if i want it to at half gains, it does quite well in keeping up with my Theos.

I'll do some more extensive testing once i get my receiver repaired or replaced.

The enclosure looks fine. What I was referring to was the speaker surround, where there is visible imperfection/glue/dust as well as the screws.

Subwoofer finish looks really good. The gloss black is beautiful, what is the increase in price for that finish?

That piano gloss finish is beautiful! Forgive me if this has been mentioned, but what was the up charge for that?

Now that I know he can do custom finishes like that I may just have to consider this... What I would really like is a sand texture to match my PSA subs. I'll have to speak with Jeremy because if he can do that I'll either be ordering more CX-10's, or even try those mighty CX-15's you always want me to get.

Easier said than done... But you are right. Haha.

I'll also be curious about the high end sub offerings, should be awesome!

For most subs, around $300.

For the smaller speakers it would be less.

We can do a textured finish. It may not be an exact match but should be to your liking.

Mine had visible imperfection/glue/dust as well as the screws. The warping around the screws makes the subwoofer look poorly mounted. Not to burst anyone's bubble, but I've mounted many subwoofers to enclosures and never have I've seen anything like that. It could be due to the material used, but even so, it looks poor. Especially considering my BPS215 is the one without a grill. A friend was over at the time of delivery and upon unboxing the subwoofer he asked me if I bought subwoofer used.

No problem! Can't speak to the subs specifically, but I know the magnets in my CX-10's are VERY strong, even smashed my fingers a few times putting the grills on. Needless to say they won't be in danger of falling accidentally while watching my movies

I just received your update.
Left you a VM.

Looks like from the pics you sent me there certainly was some moderate shipping damage.
Please feel free to give me a call, even over the weekend and we will discuss how to remedy this as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention.
