Dual VTF-15Hs have to go, according to the lady of the house.

New requirements -

Has to be gloss black, not matte.

Budget is like $3,000-$3,500ish. Dual subs preferably!

Sealed off 16x18 room.

That means the dual VTF-15Hs I have are gonna be up for sale...

But anyways, she would LIKE smaller sealed boxes, but I can squeeze in ported as long as they are ported and gloss black.

Thoughts so far are

- Dual SVS PB12 +
-Dual SVS SB13U
-Dual Rythmik E15HP
-Dual Rythmik FV15HP (She doesnt like!, but hey!)

???

Let me know! Thanks!

Couples therapy is your only hope...

I think if my wife walked into my theater and dictated what subs 'I' needed, that'd be the end

Up to $3,500 to replace your subs? Nice! cool.gif

Although the FV15HP seems to be the go-to sub in your price range, in a sealed room the size of yours and given the budget you've got, I'd be very tempted to get dual SB13-Ultras. smile.gif

Can't say for sure with the SB13s, but definitely not with the FV15HPs.

I have no intention of questioning you. I see nothing wrong with a compromise solution in which you get to continue running dual subs AND you get to spend up to $3,500 to replace your current ones. smile.gif

Well, the WAF can be hard on us but what can we do? It's nice that she's giving you a good budget to replace what you have to give up. Without a doubt I would say dual FV15HPs followed by the SVS SB13 Ultras as a 2nd place option. Either one would be great.

On topic please!

Anyone know how many dB I'd be losing by going from dual VTF15 to dual SB13u?

These are only estimates but you get the idea.

Here you have the pb13u in sealed mode vs. the VFT15 in max mode. You can also pick another mode on the Hsu since it has variable tuning...but I'd stick with max mode since that is the native tune for that sub...I believe.

here just pick a tune from the drop down menu?

So your not losing THAT much.

How does the SB13U compare to the Rythmik e15hp?

For looks or output as the FV15HP has more output but the Ultras have more looks.

Just saying, due to "WAF dictation" being the thread title, all battle of the sexes comments are on topic as battle of the sexes comments are germane to the problem. In the simple, if no "WAF dictation," the problem goes away.

For looks and output. And extension, given the OP's relatively small, sealed room.

The only available information I know of can be found in the ULF thread....not an exact science like DataBass but it gives you carefully constructed estimates for both F15, F12 and the SB13U....you'd likely have a minimal increase with the HP version of those and the cone area of the 15" is slightly larger so IMO the SB13U is one awesome little sub....wink.gif

I hope this helps...smile.gif

From the XS30 product page:
- Ultra-low bass (20-31.5 Hz): 116.6dB - 9dB* = 107.6dB
- Low bass (40-63Hz): 131.2dB - 9dB* = 122.2dB
(*for an equivalent RMS 2m ground plane measurement distance)

From this Audioholics review of the PB12-Plus:
20 Hz - 107 dB
25 Hz - 109.5 dB
32 Hz - 111.5 dB
- Ultra-low bass109.3dB (@2m)
40 Hz - 114.3 dB
50 Hz - 115.3 dB
63 Hz - 115.3 dB
- Low bass: 115dB (@2m)

I may be reading the numbers wrong, but it looks like the PB12-Plus beats the XS30 in ultra-low bass output, but the XS30 beats the PB12-Plus in low bass output. Not sure if that qualifies as a "crush" for the XS30.

(not arguing with eljaycanuck above as he posted while I was composing my below)

I can't say crush is the correct word choice but the XS30 will have more output and dig deeper and then there's the whole room gain issue you'll be able to take advantage of in your sealed room.

Personally, I would choose a pair of XS30s over a pair of PB12 Plus' but personally, we went with a pair of Rythmik FV15HPs.

So, I re-measured and the room is 15x16.

Is that a lot of room gain for a pair of SB13Us?

FWIW: One of my buddies runs a single Paradigm Servo-15 v2 in an 18' x 15' x 8.5' basement HT room and he gets usable sub-20Hz extension.

With a pair of SB13-Ultras (which are flat to 20Hz @ 2m groundplane) in your smaller space, you should have no trouble getting usable mid- to low teens extension.

IIRC, Bill Fitzmaurice (who is worth listening to IMO) has said in other threads if your longest wall is not much longer than 15 feet then you should be able to get room gain to help with the lower frequencies with a sealed sub. Based on that I think you should be okay.
