Got the svs for our living room and wife says it is way to big. She wants something smaller.

Room us pretty big. Around 20x20.

Any smaller sized subs that would work? Honestly I need two subs but have not told her that.

I do not want to waste my money on smaller sub if not worth it though.

Is your budget ~$500 (incl. shipping)? Can you increase it? If yes, how about a compact but powerful SB-2000 for $699, shipped?

Would prefer to stay around five hundred but could go up to 700.

How does the 2000 perform vs the 1000?

Thanks

Not sure, but it's got a 500W amp vs. a 300W amp and similar extension rating. It should have have greater output above the PB-1000's tuning frequency, and it may benefit from some room gain to extend lower than the PB-1000.

Plus it's considerably more compact, so it should easily pass WAF. smile.gif

I'm sorry to hear that.

How much bass do you want? Is it for music or movies?

If you want good output for movies I'm not sure you will be able to find a sub for around $500. But for the $700 I think the SB-2000 would be pretty equal except at the lower frequencies due to the size of your room.

You could certainly try out the SB-2000. It will still have the free shipping, 45 day trial etc.

She might grow accustom to it over time I know I did with a larger subwoofer. Do you have an end table it fits under?

Tell her that you if she wants a smaller subwoofer you are going to need 2 and you will have to spend double what you already spent. Ask her wouldn't be nice if you compromised here so you two can save $500 and put that money towards a vacation, or handbag or shoes she wants.

Most woman never turn "that" away once they try it wink.gif

Sorry I had to.

I really don't think it is that big compared to my new PB 2000's that is

You should contact SVS with that question.  They are very helpful about such things.  For the frequency response +/-3dB, the  PB-1000 is rated 19-270 Hz and the SB-2000 is rated 19-220 Hz.  So in that respect, they are comparable (and also explains what a great bargain the PB-1000 is).  Of course, that does not tell you how they compare with maximum SPL, which is where contacting SVS comes in, unless you can find reviews of both in which both are measured in comparable ways.

It really is too bad that your wife does not like the size of the PB-1000, as you cannot get a better subwoofer at that price.

You should tell your wife the truth.  You will pay more for a smaller subwoofer that would give you comparable performance.  Is that a good idea, or is it better to put the subwoofer in some corner out of the way?  Or you might be able to put it under an end table.

For the same $500, the smaller SB-1000?

Did you really need to quote that entire post in your reply?

If the room were smaller, I'd say yes. But the room is fairly large, so if the OP needs something smaller than his current ported sub, I figure that a more-powerful sealed (but relatively compact) sub might be the better way to go.

I'm sure there will be howls of derision from the SVS folk (I have the SB-1000), but I was amazed at the sound from a small Jamo sub I heard with a Martin Logan 40s last week in a Magnolia setup.

Take it home and compare.  And if you like it more than the SVS, if you can, get some measurements, and take copious details of the room.  Either you will be a hero of the internet, or a laughingstock.  How confident are you in your opinion?

Edited to add:

From looking at what Jamo claims at your link, I am pretty sure which it will be.  Jamo claims a -3dB point of 42 Hz.  What you are saying is completely ridiculous.  The Jamo sub is crap compared with the SVS.  If you want crap, get rid of your SVS and go with that Jamo.

Whoa!  Hold on!  My post was in no way an endorsement of the Jamo vs. the SVS.  I own SVS, and I'm very happy with it.  I think the primary interest of the OP was the size of the sub, at least if I understood his message.

My point was the Jamo is very small, and with a set of speakers as nice as the Martin Logan 40s, I thought it sounded pretty good.

That's a good size room so will be difficult to pressurize with a smaller, sealed sub. That said, I would stretch for the SB-2000.
