UNDER $1000

I'll even let you use Crutchfield, but no IDs...

GO!

This is a survey. Not to be taken as the OP looking for advice.

This sub is a monster... the S300 is also really good, just overpriced. But not for retailers, it's probably priced right. lol

OK. Does Amazon.com count as a "big box store"? If 'yes', I'll go with the SVS PC12-Plus.

Budget?

In my opinion, price performance, compared to ID, there are no decent big box retail subwoofers. Sorry to read that big box are you're only choices.

That's so sad.

By "big box" are you reffering to BB/Costco type or just b/m stores? If the latter, I would certainly consider taking a closer look at any of these http://www.goldenear.com/products/forcefield-subwoofers The specs and pricing seem to hold their own with ID, and the companies reputation for innovation and quality is also top notch...

or headphones with a bass transducer from Guitar center? I'm sure they would put it in a big box for ya. biggrin.gif

and I'm only half kidding here... if you must purchase from a brick and mortar store, and you want impact, that would be an effective way to do it... and stay within budget. Of course there are trade-offs, but there always are.

Edit* that does not meet the 1500.00 .

Under 1500.00 I would have to say Martin Logan Dynamo 1500.

Are you in the market for a subwoofer but can only purchase from B&M?

If so why?

http://www.rakuten.com/prod/klipsch-kw120thx/208504455.html?listingId=172954869

The world's finest theater operators choose Klipsch cinema systems because they deliver the full impact of the most intense action movie soundtracks without sacrificing musical definition. When designing the KW-120-THX subwoofer, Klipsch applied its theater experience to bring the same powerful, deep-driving bass to the comforts of home.

12-inch, long-throw Cerametallic™ driver
Front-firing port
Top-of-the-line internal wiring

Coz they believe sealed is the most accurate; I don't. Other reasons could be lower cost of production and simpler and more forgiving design alignment.

Take those specs with a grain of salt. That's an average sub with an utterly BS and misleading specs; rather very average if price/performance ratio is factored in. Not worth it.

There are advantages and disadvantages to subwoofer design types. One isn't better by itself.

I am beginning to prefer sealed though (speakers and subwoofer)

Krell Evolution 900e x 7

^^^ I agree and even if those specs are true its for 2 subs side by side. Well I bet things really change if you take one of those subs away. Also for movie theaters they don't usually worry about reproducing much bass below 30hz cuz theaters are a gigantic space to fill and they would need many huge subs with massive power and probably place throughout the theater to get sub 20hz frequencies out to the whole audience. IIRC THX spec does say that a THX certified speaker needs to hit 20khz @ -6db or better and a THX certified sub needs to hit 20hz @ -6db or better. Now I don't know if that's 1 or 2 meter ground plane or how that measurement is taken.

Just saying, budget and subwoofers, in my opinion, qualifies as an oxymoron.

JL Audio is like the Tesla Automobiles of home subs. So, it's like asking why Tesla doesn't make a gasoline powered vehicle. It's not their thing. This concept clearly doesn't work for everyone. If you ask a friendly local dealer about JL Audion subs they will tell you that they hung the moon and stars. If you ask folks here on AVS, you get mostly head scratching. I think JL likes it that way honestly.

Also, due to the technology that goes into JL Audio (home) subs, simply calling them sealed, and leaving it at that, is somewhat of an under characterization.

Just a heads up you would subtract 15db for 2m rms that data-bass uses. So the numbers would read 115, 107, 97.

Only guessing here, but I think they are targeting the well to do crowd that is looking for the best performance out of a good looking, smaller package. In that market, they are top notch. For their size, JL subs have top tier SPL and SQ.
