Well, and when you are on an Internet forum asking for info about subwoofers, the guy with username "basshead" is usually a good one to trust smile.gif

So I'm thinking I still might have a problem, after watching numerous blu-rays last night and more TV today the sub just has NO POWER. It sounds like its inside a box with sound proof walls.

Here are my speaker settings, which i believe are the factory defaults?

I also can't find where the "large/small speakers" selector is.

Also for Speaker Impedance, it only allows me to select 4 ohm, or 6 ohm. Even though my speakers are 8 ohm speakers.

Why is this?

I know older Denons, so I'm no fluent of the dialect of your receiver, but I'm 99% positive it should not be on full band for your mains. Start by setting all your speakers to 80hz for crossovers, including the front mains. Right now your speakers are definitely doing too much work. Finally, on Denons, I know the LFE is supposed to be on 120hz, although that is not a big difference. That's for the .1 in 5.1 or 7.1.

I'm not sure what the Double Bass is, but you should look that up and let us know (unless someone else here knows what it means). I don't think you need that turned on.

Maybe your speakers are 8 ohm rated, but dip down lower and the receiver has measured that???

See what your manual says. Maybe the 6 ohm setting is for 8 ohm and 6 ohm rated speakers.

That's your problem. Change the full band setting. Shuffle through and see if they can be set as small. Raise your other speaker settings to 80 hz and turn off double bass. Oh, and put the LPF to 120 hz.

I don't know what all these things are, I would like to understand what I am changing before I change it...What does changing the Hz of the speakers do? What does Double bass do? What is LPF?

The Dolby recommendation is to set the crossover at 80hz for speakers in an HT setup for integrating a sub. Below 80hz is the frequency at which the receiver will chose to send the audio to the sub.

Double bass is probably defined in your manual. Did you look it up?

The LFE channel is the .1 in 5.1 or 7.1. The standard recommendation for that is to set it to 120 hz.

Changing the hz is the crossover. Set the fronts to 40, 50, 60, etc until the low frequency sounds best. If you set it to 80 or 90 you should hear/feel more from your sub. Once you do this, the double bass will be disabled. Double bass is sending the low frequency to the fronts and sub.
Lpf=low pass filter. Since the .1 in 5.1 sends out lfe 120hz and down, you should try setting it at 120 so you aren't missing any low frequency.

Double bass means the main speakers are playing full range + the subwoofer is on.

So why would I want to turn that off? It seems like that would be a good thing.

Maybe or maybe not. If I were you I would have it off. That sub is very capable of taking everything below 80hz without issue. It would also likely make your rti8s sound cleaner since they wouldn't be distorting trying to play the low frequency. It will take some of the load off your avr too. I used to have my settings similar to yours before I started reading these forums. I now feel like I'm getting the most out of my equipment. YMMV

Because full range signals will be sent to the main speakers...meaning some movies could be calling upon your main speakers to play frequencies they are not designed to play. Running them full range for music is one thing, trying to get you rti's to play sub-30hz content is another. Dolby recomends 80hz as Cel mentioned...I cross my RTI-A7's @ 40hz because they are capable of 114db down to that frequency so they have plenty of headroom. Also I am driving them with a seperate power amp so my AVR is only driving a CSIA6 center and FXI-A6 surrounds.

I would use 80hz but not THX as that would apply re-eq to the center.

I would go with what you have configured. You'll need to spend a good bit of time reading and learning. Quick answers in the forum like this aren't going to help you figure out how to fine tune your setup beyond that, and the settings you have now should be FAR better than what you had to begin with.

That's awesome! Must have just been a bad connection. I should have thought to have suggested that first. It's happened to me in diagnosing audio equipment problems.

Probably getting about as good a bass as out of your headphones now, huh? smile.gif
