Good evening guys: Just want some quick recomendations for a subwoofer. Today I received a 70 inch Sharp Aquos Q + and have set it up with :

PioneerVSX 1123 AV

Bowers and Wilkings - 6-1/2 3-way Center Channel

Bowers and Wilkins Floorstanding 61/2 3 way ( 683B)  2 speakers each

Bose 301  2 each for Rear Left and Right (really they are not in the rear but more directly on the side)

Although its a 7:2 channel received I elected for now to go with these 5 speakers

I would like to know if I need to add a subwoofer. The Pioneer has 2 outputs for subwoofers.  Will adding this make a huge difference? I am just starting in the HT area (just bought my first house) so I am not sure that it would make a difference for a novice like me.

Please let me know and also recommend something along the lines (budget wise) of what I already have.  I believe I made a killing on these BW speakers from Bestbuy. I got them at 60% (floor model only about 10 weeks on the floor). I also got the Receiver for 290$. So in all, I only have about 1200$ invested so far, minus the tv.

There is a BW subwoofer that goes for about 500$ (too much for me as of right now), it is a 8" 200 watt.

What do you guys think or recommend.  My area is not large by any means, it is somewhere around 16 X 18 ft or so. This is  just a guess. Thanks.

If someone can direct me via  a link on how to get a good basic set up for my TV and my AV I would appreciate as well.

THanks

For music, you could do without one. For movies, you should consider getting one.

If your room has 8-foot ceilings then you are around 2,300 cu. ft., which is still considered "small". I agree with eljay. The SVS PB-1000 is one of the best quality subs available for 500 bucks. SVS also carries a comprehensive consumer policy "Consumer Bill of Rights" that you should read. It will give you piece of mind.

That being said, there are subwoofers from NXG and Dayton you might also consider (for far less money). Dayton has two that are interesting: The SUB-1200 (12-inch driver) for about 150 bucks (you can get two for about 300 bucks) and the SUB-1500 (15-inch driver) for around 200 bucks. I believe the NXG may be a bit higher quality than the Daytons, but I'm not sure how much it costs (I'd say around the 350-400 buck range), but they are constantly out of them. Jim Wilson has reviewed two of these subs.

NXG NX-BAS-500 review here: http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/speaker-subwoofer-reviews/67178-nxg-nx-bas-500-subwoofer-review.html

I think a sub is absolutely something you should get. Even for music with the speakers you have. Would depend on how much you want to spend. The SVS suggestion is a good one. Dual subs even better (not for output necessarily, but for smoother response throughout the room). Another budget friendly suggestion might be the Reaction Audio 212 http://www.avsforum.com/t/1512281/reaction-audio-subs

^^ +1. Reaction Audio still has a couple of the early versions of this sub for 350 bucks. That's dual-opposing 12-inch drivers, but they won't last long.

Thanks for the advice. Found a local guy on craigslist that has the svs u guys recommended. Trying to get it for around 375 or so. He suposedly has the receipt showing is about 8months old. I. Know used speakers may not be recommended but it seems his system is not very powerful, he is selling all of it for 1000 including this speaker which is by far his most expensive item. Again thnks.

If the sub is only 8 months old, you should be able to get the balance of the five-year warranty transferred to you. Contact SVS to confirm that they'll transfer it to you and to find out what info you need to provide to them in order for that to happen. Best of luck! cool.gif

I appreciate everyone's recommendation of the SVS. Believe it or not, that same night I did a search on craigslist and I found an SVS PB-1000 that was 1 yr old. Guy was selling entire system, I asked if he would part out the sub, he told me to give him a week. Yesterday I picked it up, 325$. I think an incredible price, he bought it June 14th 2013. It was incredible fortunate, the only SVS item on craigslist in DC, Northern VA, and MD was this SVS and I was able to get it.

I set it up yesterday and the change was incredible. This was just, allowing the AVS to calibrate and setting the Hz and Phase knobs like half way. I will be doing searches on here to figure out how to adjust it.

Once I adjust the Sub, I imagine I need to have the AVS recalibrate itself. Again, for newbie ears, it was incredible, the whole basement was shaking. Walking down the stairs to the room you could feel the air moving/vibrating.

Human nature is never satisfied, although I'm blown away, probably after a little while I'll get the second sub!

Thanks again everyone for the recommendation!
