How much bass is overkill?

Crazy question right?? How much bass would you consider overkill for a room? I have dual SVS PB-2000's and thinking of upgrading to dual PB12 Plus's. Room is about 12x15. Would this be overkill?

That wouldn't be overkill. So many subs that it takes up a large volume of your room is overkill

As long as the subs are level matched there will never be overkill, just headroom. And the more subs the smoother the response.

switch? Oh I thought you meant adding them. I don't think switching would be a huge noticeable upgrade, it would add MAYBE 6 dB. Adding them would add about 12 dB though. I guess it depends how much you can sell the 2000's for.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the PB12-Plus's, as I could beat their performance for half their cost with a DIY sub.

LOL OK. Def. not add 2 more subs in my little room. I'll probably just keep the PB-2000's then if there won't be a noticeable difference.

Why are you wanting to upgrade? Are your subs getting maxed out? You want more volume? Want lower extension? Don't like the sound?

Adding bass traps in the corners will greatly improve bass quality, you can build them for like 40 bucks a corner out of insulation, plywood and burlap.

If you want lower extension, dual sealed subs would be pretty awesome in a small room like that, you would get huge gains in volume at like 8 to 18 hz compared to ported.

You could also consider a usb measurement microphone, and a miniDSP to EQ your subs.

I went from PC Ultra 13 to a SB Ultra 13, as I never needed the output levels on a ported sub

But there would be a noticeable difference. 6db is a LOT. Plus you could easily run them in 16hz mode and drop your in room response to a solid 14-15hz.

If you can afford it, I would go for it.

It's a $2800.00 upgrade, without knowing his speakers, room, amplifier, listening habits, etc. it would be hard to justify the upgrade IMO.

Yeah but he might not even need that 6dB. It's like saying get a Ferrari for pootling around town. Same for me, even with PC Plus never bottomed it out.

I don't think he needs to upgrade his dual PB2000.

Seeing that he has PB2000s I'm guessing he's within his one year trade in- upgrade period, in which case it would not cost $2800.

And only the OP can say whether or not he needs it.

There's a forum member here with 2 PC13 Ultras in a similar size room. My room is not much larger than the OP's and I could easily appreciate and use the extra output a second PC12 plus would give.

The room is appx. 12x15x7.5
7.2 setup with
Yamaha Aventage RX-A1030
SVS Ultra center and 6 SVS Ultrabookshelf
2 PB-2000's

SVS suggested I wouldn't notice a difference in upgrading in my room size, even if my room was bigger

Can't see how they could or would say that. The Plus in 16hz mode obviously digs a little deeper, has more output at that range, has more output over the rest of the range, so you end up with more headroom allowing you to boost the low end even more if you want.

I had to turn my PC12+ down about 5dbs and run it in 20hz mode just to try and alleviate the chuffing. I'm actually a little bummed I get so much chuffing at levels I don't think are that loud, at least to me.

If it weren't for being out in Hawaii I'd have traded it in for a PC13 or SB13 Ultra by now.
