Best sub on a budget

Hey guys! My new system is coming along great and im ready to buy the last piece (for now) to complete my 2.1 setup. Here is my gear so far:

B&W 685 S2's as fronts
Marantz SR8001

Now I'm looking for a sub to complete the system. I mainly listen to music (all types) and for the most part, I dont find the b&w's to be that lacking in base for most of my music. I do however want the sub for hip hop/rap and for the occasional movie watching to give it that extra kick! I don't want to spend more than 250 or 300 at the most. I dont mind buying refurbished or used. Let me know your suggestions! Thanks,
Justin

At that price there's not much competition for the NXG BAS-500.

Thanks! Never heard of the brand but the reviews make this look like a great option! I will certainly consider it.

A lot of people like Bic subs, I've always thought they spent more on making them look pretty than sound good. Jim Wilson has reviewed more subs than I'll probably hear in my lifetime, so his opinion means something:

Honestly, though, your speakers are nice. I would probably save up some money and aim a little higher than these budget subs.

But, if it were my money and it was between those two subs, I would buy the NXG.

I believe Jim Wilson will be reviewing this BIC sub soon (perhaps next month?). Hey, I like BIC subs (for what they are ... great starter subs on a budget) and own one (and gave one away), but until Jim reviews this BIC, my money is on the NXG.

With a little searching, you can snatch up a used SVS in that range, generally a 25-31PCi. SVS still offers the 20hz port for it too if you decide you need it to go lower.

You won't find a better option in that price range.

As long as you don't play them really loud, the BIC subs sound pretty darned good. I use a BIC F12 for my personal computer audio and consider it a great buy. I have a 12" B&W sub in my bedroom and I think the BIC is pretty much equivalent. The main difference is that I've upgraded the B&W with a heftier plate amp than the BIC has. Otherwise I would consider them exactly equivalent.

It looks just like BIC F12 which as exactly the same driver except for the color of the cone. Should be fine.

I'm about half way through my first draft of the H-100II review now, so it should be posted in about a week or two.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

That sucks. It was Reaction Audio's BPS 212 non turbo, twin 12"s for $329 and free shipping. Would've been far better than what you presently are looking at.

As usual, I'm looking forward to your review, Jim. Should be interesting.
