What subwoofer is best for my room?

I have a Yamaha HTR2064 av receiver and the speakers and passive sub came as a package with the receiver (all yamaha) and I wanted to upgrade my subwoofer to get a bit more out of films and my rather bassy music. I have a budget of around £200 and because there are so many different subs out there I don't know which one would suit my room. It is carpeted, is 7ft wide by 12ft long, is on the fist floor and the only places the sub can really go is at the front of the room or in the middle of the room at the end of my bed by the wall. I have been looking at the BK Gemini 2 but have heard downfiring subs aren't good on carpet or first floor rooms. Is this true and are there any other subs which would be good for my room. Thanks

You need a better sub than the BK Gemini for that room. BK XLS200 minimum I'd say, and even then I'd spend more, XLS400 or even Monolith if movies are priority. There's also SVS SB2000 or PB2000.

£200 won't get you much.

What's the passive sub?

Some people think that passive subs are much better deals than powered subs.

The passive sub is a Yamaha NS-SWP20 which came with the rest of the package.

Ah, it took me a while to find info on your system - mainly because this is an American based forum. Yeah, that's a small sub....stretching the definition of sub - a 6" driver isn't going to give you much bass.

Unfortunately, I'm not versed on good budget subs in the UK.

The room is only 7 feet wide? Anything decent should fill that room. I'm not sure what's available over there. If you were in the states I'd say a Dayton 10" or 12" would be fine. How about listing some options of what's available to you? BTW, down firing subs are fine on carpet. Hsu actually says to put theirs on a throw rug if you have hard floors.

edit: I just looked up that sub you mentioned, looks like a good option.

I'd still go for the XLS200 or XLS400
