Question Budget sub choices: Bic, Klipsch or Polk?

Hey gang, in the market for a sub with some oomph, but on a budget.

Have read great reviews about the BIC PL200, and it's on Amazon for $328, have seen it on sale for $259
http://www.amazon.com/BIC-PL-200-Aco...keywords=pl200

Saw the Klipsch Sub-12HG, for $289 also with decent reviews, nice and powerful.
http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Sub-12...psch+subwoofer

Then I saw the Polk 505, for 251 and decent reviews, although I came across some unhappy customers I think on this board that said it was built poorly
http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-12-...polk+subwoofer

Don't have a crazy system but am slowly upgrading, and have discovered the sub (given to me years ago) is woefully underpowered and is actually rattling when the deep lows rumble through...

Receiver: Sony STR DN1000
Center: JBL NL-100
Fronts: Polk TSX550T
Sub: Advent Qrtz
Rear center: Infinity CC-1
Surrounds: Bose 161

Thanks for any input/suggestions!

Been looking for a good budget sub myself going by reviews & comments from Jim Wilson & other posters I've come up with the following list of best bang for the buck subs at or below $300 from best to worst.

1. Cadence CSX-12 MKII ... $300 shipped at ebay or when on sale on Amazon

2. BIC PL200 ... around $280-260 when on sale

3.(TIE) BIC H100II or NXG 500 ... although I give the nod to the BIC H100II because you can get it $20-30 less than the NXG 500

4. Dayton Audio SUB-1200 ... at $130+ shipping its a steal.

*WILDCARDS*
Dayton Audio SUB-1500 ... $200 no idea where this would fall in the list at least above the Dayton SUB-1200

Pyle Home PDSB15A ... $235 Jim may be doing a review of the sub "soon"

The Klipsch Sub-12 is really a nice sub, especially if you can catch it on sale for $199.99. I have it and also bought the NXG NX-BAS-500. I'm far from an expert and don't have an SPL meter or anything like that, but did run both subs through some frequency response tests. The subs are close, with the BAS-500 maybe having slight edge in lower extension. The Sub-12, however, seemed to have the edge in output level, especially 30Hz to 50Hz. They were really a close match up overall, but I liked the sound of the klipsch a little better. Seemed to have a bit deeper sound and a bit more punch in the delivery of the bass.

I think that's your best bet for under $300

Is the CSX-12 still available somewhere? My source at Cadence told me it was discontiued, and that was at least a year ago. He said they might be putting out something else, but thus far I haven't heard word one.

Regarding the Pyle... all I said was I might contact Pyle soon, not that I was actually going to publish anything soon. I haven't even reached out to them, but you're like the 4th or 5th person to ask me about that particular model. With what appears to be a growing interest I may have to bump it up on my list.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

The CSX-12 Mark II is still for sale on Amazon & ebay http://www.amazon.com/CSX-12-Mark-Ac...ce+CSX-12+MKII

As far as the Pyle I'm just interested cause of the fact of a 15" sub in the 250ish price range ... only other option is the Dayton sub-1500 that I know of.

Quick question, received the sub, only took 4 days which is impressive. The biox was beat up but the sub was immaculate.

SO I've fired it up and upon recommendations, loaded up Tron Legacy. It was simply ridiculous! Crazy wall shaking gloriousness

But, watching other movies, it's a bit lackluster and not as impressive. Is this just encoding and some movies just don't have the 'oomph'?
I loaded up Start Trek the second one, DTSMA 7.1 I think even though my setup is 5.1 and was expecting similar craziness as Tron but am a bit disappointed.

I left crossover at 80hz which was recommended in the manual and have th volume basically at 2 or 3.

Setup is:
Receiver: Sony STR DN1000
Center: JBL NL-100
Fronts: Polk TSX550T
Sub: Acoustech PL200
Rear center: Infinity CC-1
Surrounds: Bose 161

Just wondering what other settings I should be playing around with.

Cheers!

A good sub will come across differently depending upon the soundtrack, encoding and source material, so don't expect everything to be the same. And in the case of Tron that's one very thick and overdone soundtrack, so I'm not surprised it was potent.

Did you run your room EQ software? If not, that could be part of the issue. Either way, you should probably give the sub a few more days to loosen up. Things might change then.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

There are lots of other movies to see. Try The Incredible Hulk, War of the Worlds, 9, Star Trek (1st one), Terminator Salvation, Lone Survivor. Tron Legacy is a great bass movie, but like Jim said it's overdone. Every movie will sound different. I recommend playing a bass intense movie scene at a lower volume during the day. This will help loosen up the voice coil, and totally change the way the subs performance.

No. But, it does make for unfair comparisons.
