So, I have just assembled my temporary home theater system and the subwoofer that I purchased is definitely anemic, as I suspected it would be. I currently have a single Dayton Audio Sub-1500 (150w RMS, 15" driver). Originally, I intended on adding 2 but there is just no good spot for me to put another one in the room.
The room that this will be going into is 19x12.5x8 and about 1,900 cubic feet. There is an opening into another room.
I have a firm budget of $350 or less for this sub, and I realize that given my budget and room size, I may not be getting what I should be getting. However, I realize that there are better options than the single Dayton sub that I have right now that was only $165 that are still less than $350.
Here's my room:
Among the ones that I am considering:
Jamo J-112-DA
BIC PL-200
Klipsch Sub-12hg (hard pill too swallow when these have gone on sale for $199 shipped in the past)
I am looking for recommendations for subs that would be a good fit given my criteria. The primary purpose will be 90% movies and TV and 10% gaming and music.
Thanks!
PS - The image showing the subwoofer placement indicates the spot where the subwoofer crawl yielded the best results.
Jamo J-112 for $250 on ebay. If you buy it through the same seller on newegg.com, you can get $15 off through Dec. 11th using Android pay and the code ANDROID6.
EDIT: That should read SAME seller, not sale seller.

Sub1500 isn't a bad budget sub, but it's a bit under-powered for a 15" driver. I previously had one and also had three of the sub-1200's. The J-112 is a clear step up above the Dayton subs.
The Emotiva that you linked looks to be similar to the Jamo J-112 in specs across the board. The Jamo J-112 is also basically the same sub as the Klipsch R112SW.
With the Jamo having double the RMS, you think that it could at worse have less output and at best be a lateral move in terms of performance?
Unfortunately, no, I cannot stack another sub due to space constraints.
I've never understood why people recommend DIY subs when the person never asked about DIY. There is a whole separate forum for DIY questions and help for those interested.
Are you looking for more output or better sound? Cause you won't get either to any appreciable degree. Save another $350 unless you won't ever get any more money ever again or need it now to trade for hostages. If not keep the 1500 and fall in love over again or save up more $.
Is there any 3rd party comparisons of the jamo vs klipsch vs something else similar?
Or are all the comparisons purely subjective?
Even some rew sweeps of them would be better than opinion.
To the OP, Should've saved a few more bucks for a real "upgrade"
And what exactly can you get that's a real "upgrade" for a few bucks more? RBH I-12 or SVS PB-1000 are $500. Did you not read the OP stating his budget was max $350 OR LESS? Not $350 or more. Not everybody is looking to spend more and more on a sub.
The Jamo J-112 IS an upgrade....a real upgrade. People popping off on this with no first hand experience with these subs have no clue what they are talking about. I have the J-12 and J-112 and can tell you the J-112 is clearly the better sub by a long shot. Let me shine some light on this for you, Fattykidd.
The Jamo J-12 would be a lateral move from the Dayton sub-1500. These would be similar subs in overall performance and there really wouldn't be any reason to ditch one to get the other. However, the Jamo J-112 is from the more expensive Concert Series Line, while the J-12 is from the cheaper Studio Speaker Line. The J-112 is equivalent to the Klipsch R-112sw, both from the same parent company Audiovox. Same amp, same slot port (one front, other rear), same fequency response. The Klipsch R-115SW, the 15" model, is a well regarded and reviewed sub and the R-112SW and J-112 would be slightly scaled down versions in size and performance.
As I mentioned previously, I've been running dual J-112's and dual RBH I-12's to see how well the Jamo's could keep up. I've been very impressed with what they can do in comparison to the much larger, more expensive I-12's. Not as good, but all things considered they are great performers. Do note that the J-112 does have a retail price of around $800, which isn't a realistic price at all. When you get them for $200-$250, they are a great bang for the buck for somebody wanting a sub in THAT PRICE RANGE.
Sorry mixmaster... Still not understanding. It still seems like a bunch of subjective opinion.
Not sure why ya get so defensive when someone doesn't automatically jump on board with you when you push the jamo. Seems a little too personal.
Since you've tried every mid bass module under the sun, how does the klipsch sub12 stand in this grouping? This I've had in room for 15minutes of testing.
Just cancelled my order for the Jamo J112. With all of the options in the used marketplace that will get me closer to what I am looking for while still remaining around my budget, I'll get more bang for my buck going the used route. If anyone sees this, let me know what you've got!
There are quite a few good points being made in this thread aside from all the banter. I think buying a used ID sub from SVS, PSA, or HSU would be a solid option. These companies offer great support and most likely will have parts to keep a older sub running. So buying a used PB12 could be a great option long as the price is right and its a sledge amp.
I also just realized that both SVS and PSA are less than an hour away from me, which would be less of a headache in the future if I do happen to have problems.
