Is there an advantage/disadvantage to each design such as in the SVS PB10 and PB12

I don't think that there's much audible advantage in sealed subs. The down-firing driver does provide some physical protection.

In ported subs, the difference is down-firing ports. Can do a very effective job of suppressing port noise. Eliminates port noise complaint. Like this one:

I have to get a larger Sub but my problem is that it will be on the side of the seating area.

Hence a front firing sub will not be directed towards the seating area, in that case would a downward firing sub offer better sound dispertion ?

Bass isn't directional, but with a side-firing driver some positions will be closer to the driver than others the same distance from the sub. Not so on a down-firing sub.

Not sure what the net effect is, but I guess the latter could be said to have better dispersion.

Do you have kids? I worry about my front firing driver being damaged by my kids. So far so good though....knock wood.

Kids are older so that is not a problem. What I am liking is that there is no grill that can fall off or tabs that can break off

The down-firing units seem to be more solid, perhaps it is the lower center of gravity
