That is VERY interesting. I assume that a calibrated microphone is included with the package.

Does anybody know whether or not it will have the ability to store different EQ curves which can be selected via remote (i.e. one with a flat response for music, one with a slight deep bass lift for movies, etc.)?

Scott, I am working on getting a DD-18, and was looking at the owner's manual on Velodyne's website last night ... I think you can have 5 different curves altogether ...

and don't forget, Velo is coming out with a major software revision within the next couple of months.... :)

ps- Craig, I tried to hint at the SMS-1 as best I could. Didn't know that Velo introduced it at the show.

Craig,

I too am interested in the DD-18 (actually I would get two of them) as a potential candidate to replace my dual Triad Platinum PowerSubs. I will be very interested in your comments regarding the DD-18, particularly with respect to its performance as compared to other subwoofers which you are very familiar with (i.e. ACI Maestro and SVS B4+). I almost pulled the trigger on the Maestro's but decided to wait.

BTW, are you purchasing the DD-18 or borrowing one for a trial?

Scott, I will be purchasing the DD-18 ... I prefer to purchase the products reviewed, as this keeps things ... honest. By the way, I am actually purchasing this merely for personal use ... not to do a formal review.

I will be happy to give some ideas regarding sound quality versus other subwoofers, as long as it can be done without the usual suspects getting all worked up about it ... :)

I would also be interested Craig in what you have to say. I would imagine that the 18 would be an ungodly amount of bass considering I have the 12 in my 19x17 room with a cathedral ceiling of 15 feet and it pounds in there. Then, when you buy the 18, you can tell me how to use the eq. ;)

Hi,
There are 6 presets available to store different EQ curves, crossovers, phase, etc. With the new software release (2.0), a different EQ curve can be stored with each preset.

The 2.0 release is about to enter beta and is expected to be generally available in March. The upgrade is free of charge and works with all DD subwoofers.

The stand-alone box, called the Digital Drive Subwoofer Management System (SMS-1), will be out in the summer, and also provides the presets, different EQ curves, etc.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Bruce,

How many subwoofers can be EQ'd with one box (i.e., will the box have more than one subwoofer output)? If there is only one subwoofer output, is there any reason why the output could not be split for multiple subs so that the overall response from the subs could be EQ'd together? Will the box have a remote, and if so, what functions would it control?

Thanks.

Hi Scott,
Up to three subs can be controlled from the one box. It will have the same remote as DD, which includes presets, mute, night mode, volume, etc. as well as a video out and the full menu system found on DD subs. The only function not supported is the theater/music setting, which involves setting the loop gain on the DD servo - since this is controlling a non-DD sub we can't control the servo! :)

Bruce,

Any other goodies you'd like to divulge about software version 2.0? Will there be a full range sweep tone? How about the ability to completely turn off either the low pass or high pass filters? Inquiring minds wanna know. :)

Bruce,
Sounds cool. Have you ever considered selling DD subs minus the EQ electronics for those who wish to use more than one DD sub in the same room?

Great news on the stand alone SMS-1. This type of thing has been needed for a long time. If this thing stays at $500 mark it will sell like hotcakes. Can't wait:)

Hi Scott,
Good idea, but not really feasible. The servo, signal processing, etc. are all run from the DSP, so there really aren't any savings. Besides, the RS232 that talks between the units requires the DSP.

So now there is competition with the av123 eq sub box (R-DES) that is supposed to be out soon?

Prices are similar- Velodyne $499, AV123 $399
velodyne controls more than 1 sub (huge for me)
Velodyne has more bands of eq- the more the merrier!!
Velodyne 2.0 will have AUTO eq- dummy proof for me!
Velodyne has video output, av123 to a computer.
Velodyne comes with remote and mic, av123 doesnt?

Craig you seem to be the most informed on the av123 products. please comment. I know, I know, neither of these products are out....but there is already a lot of information about both of these units on the net.

The R-Des unit will have four parametric bands against the eight that Velo uses... add to that the points you already made... and the Velo looks like the clear leader in this department.

The only advantages I can see with R-Des as of now is a lower price (though if the Velo stand alone comes with a microphone, forget that) and the ability to store virtually unlimited curves in your computer. I don't see many people worrying about that, though.

Velo's six storable curves are a LOT.

Looks like AV123 better go back to the drawing boards. If in fact the Velodyne is going to be at $499 and comes with the mike and on screen display for those of us who don't have a computer in there Home Theater they are in trouble.

How does a DD-18 owner go about becomming a 2.0 Beta User?

Bruce,

Many thanks indeed. :)

Hey, was there ever any consideration given to having a full range sweep tone so that one could see what their mains were doing up top? Aside from that, lots of awesome additions to an already superb feature set. I look forward to the download. :)

Great Work!

Bruce,
What is the resolution of the analyser (i.e, 1/3, 1/12, etc.)? The file attached to an earlier post of yours suggests that a 1/3 analyser is used. I hope that this is not correct as this is really inadequate for bass frequencies.
