It just the "correct" term for what is often referred to as "subsonic," i.e. frequencies too low to be heard by the human ear.

I am late to the game and I just got my first "REAL" sub (SVS PB-10). I just played the Incredibles Run through the jungle scene and it blew me away! I was amazed at all of the sounds I was hearing now that I couldn't hear at all before! Is this the best possible demo for Bass and all around sound affects? Does it get better than that Demo?

I have heard all of these except Pulse and Superman Returns and agree they are all great demo materials. Of the ones you listed I choose War of the Worlds as the best. But you really can't go wrong with any of them

Just to chime back in, I watched Shooter last night.

In Chapter 1, when he is sniping, there is some great tight bass.

I think it's chapter 3 or 4, he shoots the DInty More, that shot is awesome.

In the end of the film, when the Napalm bomb goes off, is amazing...

Very clean, tight bass movie. Not too bad either.

just upgraded my speaker setup so I'm discovering my dvds again. Have noticed most of the THX certified flicks have impressive bass - Star Wars franchise, Monsters Inc, Incredibles etc

Love The Day After Tomorrow which has several really impressive sounding scenes. On a lacklustre note I was disappointed with Master & Commander. I expected some great effects from the ships cannons but was sorely disappointed especially since both movies are in DTS.

What did you upgrade to? I don't think I've ever heard of someone being unimpressed with M&C on a nice system. True, it's not like every scene is saturated with bass but there are definitely a few excellent parts.

Master & Commander is one of the finest DVD recordings ever made, with a beautiful classical music soundtrack, wonderfully atmospheric use of the surrounds, "you-are-there" detail and ambience, and perhaps the most realistic authentic ship cannons recorded on disc. But it generally takes a powerful, larger sub to come close to reproducing the full weight and dynamics of those very demanding cannon scenes, something like an HSU, SVS, or upper model Velodyne, etc. Your Jamo E7 Sub is aesthetically beautiful and a good performer for what it is, but it's simply too small and underpowered to do justice to material that has significant bass demands below 40hz. If you can take a listen to M&C on a calibrated system with one of the known killer subwoofers, you will see why everyone includes this movie on their top DVD list.

The E7 sub has an advertised tuning point of 40hz and thats probably a stretch since it isn't noted in db's. What you have is a good quality bass module. A true subwoofer needs to at least extend down below 30hz or so to provide the impact you need. . Even my small Velodyne vibrated the walls during those cannon blasts. It made me feel like I should be running for cover! You're just missing a lot of bass content with the E7, during those scenes.

Thanks for the reply Ian - 2 questions, how then do you explain that the Day After Tomorrow sounds fantastic - really deep rumbles, the floor vibrates & when my wife & I are in the shower down the hallway you can literally feel shockwaves hitting the bathroom door? But with Master & Commander - nothing?

2. The cutoff is 40hz but the frequency range is 25-150hz am I missing something?

I don't know what model velodyne you're using but I found a similar size velodyne sub - checkout the specs:

velodyne:10inch - 375w peak - 40hz-120hz - 28-120hz
Jamo E7: 10inch - 675w peak - 40hz-150hz - 25-150hz

With the exception of peak power no real difference there but obviously I don't know what you're running.

Regardless, I'm really enjoying the setup & just wanted to point out that some movies certainly sound a lot better than others.

My first experience with the speakers was sitting on the edge of the couch with my younger son watching the THX logo appear, you know the 1 of the planet Earth containing a thunder storm. We watched the storm grow larger then it literally exploded - it was like someone had just slapped us both in the face & knocked us backwards into the couch, we looked at each other & both cracked up laughing, then the wife & older son ran into the room. Priceless experience.

Just wanted to share my experience and not really looking to get into any sort of p..... competition.

Do you think the new Transformers movie could become the new reference movie in terms of sound and video? I watched the making of transformers last night on HBO and it sure looks like those action scenes are going to be chocked full of LFE and thunderous explosions. Can't wait to check this one out on HD-DVD if HD-DVD is still around by the time they release it.

Hhhmmm - I'll watch it again & check my setup. Just vaguely remember expecting more from the movie. On a sidenote I just watched The Patriot (Mel Gibson) again - my version is only in DD but the bass effects were excellent - now thats what a cannon should sound like

"The Day After Tomorrow" probably has more bass content above 30hz which can still produce plenty of punch. Also, advertised peak power has very little merit. You should be looking for the RMS rating, which like the db range, Jamo doesn't show, and even that rating doesn't tell the whole story. As Tom Nousaine would say: "It doesn't matter if a manufacturer boasts that it's sub uses 1000 watts if another sub can achieve the same result with a 100." It's what comes out of a sub that is important. Here are the specs of the two subs you're comparing:

Your sub: (From Jamo's web site)
E 7SUB Specifications:

Woofer (inch/mm) 10/254

limiter limiter

Amplifier Rated Output 675 peak

Frequency Range 40 - 150 (Where is the 25-150hz rating you posted and even if that was correct, what is the slope? What is the real tuning point? With out the db measurement this tells me nothing.)

Crossover Frequency 40 - 150

cut Off Frequency -

phase Adjustable 0 - 180

mainsVoltage 115

totalVolume 52,7/1,86

Velodyne DPS/DLS 10:

Specifications DPS-10
Amplifier - Class A/B: 375 watts Dynamic/
185 watts RMS Power

Woofer: 10" forward firing
(8.2" piston diameter)

Voice Coil: 2" four-layer copper
Magnet: 40 oz. (2.5 lbs)
Low Pass Crossover: 40 Hz-120 Hz adjustable
(12 dB/octave initial48 dB/octave ultimate)
Inputs: Line-Level and Speaker-Level Line-Level and Speaker-Level
Outputs: Speaker-Level Speaker-Level
Frequency Response: 28-120 Hz (+/- 3 dB)
Weight: 51 lbs (approx)
Warranty: Two years (parts and labor)

Most movies have plenty of good bass content above 30 or 40 hz and can provide a very good HT experiance. Enjoy!

Hi Mailiang - I'm reasonably new to home theatre but there is no way I'd pay over a grand for a sub which couldn't go into the sub 40hz range. I therefore followed your directions to the Jamo website & sure enough the site has the frequency range listed with the same figures as the crossovers:

40hz - 150hz

it is clearly a mistake!!!!

On the same web site jamo.com -- speakers -- concert -- E7 goto both the owners manual & the white paper & you'll find exactly what I had posted previously:

crossover: 40hz - 150hz
freq range: 25 - 150hz
Warranty 2yrs on electronics & 7yrs on other parts including cabinets speaker units etc.
Can't help with those other stats though.

On the same web site you'll also see the list of awards which was what attracted me to the package in the first place - I would not have thought a package with awards from so many various organisations would only include a sub with a bottom end of 40hz.

Awards:
Golden Ear Award 2005-2006 AudioVideo Poland Feb 2006 - E 7 Series Home Theater
Loudspeaker 2004-2005 EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association) Dec 2004
E 770 PDD Sound and Image, Australia Jul 2005
E 770PDD Best Buys Home Theater, Australia Feb 2005
E 700PDD Essential Home Cinema, UK Dec 2004
E 700PDD What Video & Widescreen TV, UK Dec 2004
E 700 Hi-Fi Choice, UK Nov 2004

I can't help you out with those other specs but I'm not too concerned considering the range of home theatre experts from the above publications have no doubt taken that into consideration before delivering those awards.

The E770 floorstanding speakers go as low as 35hz (which I'm told is good for floorstanding speakers) & the E7 Sub has a bottom end of 25hz - together I love the sound & they provide more than enough base. I understand the velodyne subs are also a very good speaker - how bout we get back to discussing moves

1. Darla taps tank, Chap 25 (1:18:16)

Listened to that section - 1 of the best I've heard yet - thought Darla would only tap the tank once or twice but she hits it something like 5 or 6 times & the bass goes deeper with each tap - very impressive, good find, thanks.

Dr. Pain...a little `planning ahead'. Add Ratatouillie in December! ON par with The Incredibles.
