You are probably thinking overkill in terms of SPL output. Yes. You probably don't need that much, but it doesn't hurt to have it, as everyone has pointed out.

The thing is that you won't be able to get a 10" sub that will have the great low end frequency range of the Plus. 12" subs cheaper than $500 don't have flat frequency responses; they look like ski slopes. So you can't do better with a smaller or cheaper sub on the quality of the output you will get from the Plus.

Thanks for the replay. The overall size of the room is 15' x 20' with open stairs on one side leading upstairs, as well as open space leading to the kitchen. Approximately 1/2 of the room is the seating area and home theater, but this probably doesn't make a difference. I mainly listen to music (rock). I know sealed subs are better for music, but Epik Legends seem to have unreliable, underpowered amps.

With that size space, it would definitely be worth the wait for your HT usage if you are willing.

As for music, know that with this class of sub, they are both good for music. The Epik is better in the way that a good ribeye is better than a good sirloin, not better than hamburger. They are both good steaks. For instance, I was very impressed with how rich the bass notes on Stevie Ray Vaughan's Tin Palley alley sounded with my EX when I first got it (as was a friend of mine who is a bass player).

Hi Pain Infliction, what is your REW setup? And how are you doing the measurement? Only done REW a few times when I first received the EX's.

I am using and external soundcard with a radio shack spl meter. At first i was using the YPAO mic that came with my avr, but that was not very good for REW. As far as EQ goes....I am going to get the mini dsp. I am not eq-ing right now. Just wanted to see the difference between my subs and with both of them on and the difference between MO and ME modes. I am only doing the subs and not each speaker. Do you have any charts to show?

I've got a Plus and an EX. Buy the Plus to start, with the sale, you won't be disappointed. My room totals up to 4500 cu ft. Bought the plus when they offered it to me sale price when the EX went on backorder at sale price at the beginning of the year. Found an EX locally for a great price I couldn't pass up. Still don't have my EX dialed in or the placement where I want it, but you will not be disappointed with the sub at that price point. Don't wait. Do it. Then when the EX goes on sale, get one of those.

Sorry, didn't save any graph. Are you running soundcard to receiver or directly to subs?

Oh okay.....Do you have an idea of how you are going to set up the quad EX's. One in every corner, one at avery midpoint, dual stacked, or integrating them in the best spot per REW or something like that?

Every corner for a more consistent response

I like the corner placement as well because of the LF factor. It is more defined in the corner as to the mid wall placement you dont get low fq like you do the corner placement.

You don't need a sealed sub for rock. Rock by design is very top heavy with a constant drum beat, not a lot of transients. By the way, do you know the origins of rock? You can PM if you do.

On the screen there is a camera by the graph. click on that camera and when you do a window opens up. select what you want listed with the pic and what you want the graph to say. it saves the file as a jpeg.

Thanks, I'm new on REW so if something don't seem right please don't beat me.

My setup (ran directly to sub from soundcard out)
RS Digital SPL meter -> single RCA cable -> UCA202 (red input) -> USB cable -> Laptop
UCA202 (red output) -> single RCA cable -> EX "Sub IN"

EX settings:
Power - On, X-Over - ByPass, Crossover Freq. - 180Hz, Port Mode - ME, Phase - 0, Volume 2.5

Here is the chart for the left EX w/o Audyssey
Attachment 245043
Here is the chart for the right EX w/o Audyssey

You can see how the room effects the Ex's differently. Have you thought about getting a mini dsp or any other type of EQing device to smooth out the response?

Thought about it but I'm happy and contend with just running Audyssey for now.

Unfortunately, I don't have room for two subwoofers. I'm sure I'll be happy with the plus, but I should probably get the best I can within a certain price range if I'm only going with one sub. I might pull the trigger tomorrow, I don't know. I just don't want any regrets. I'm upgrading from a Velodyne CHT-10, which sounded good, but isn't enough for my room. I want to feel the bass!

Maybe you don't "need" it, but I enjoyed the sound when I was younger and had 10" Kicker and Rockford Fosgate boxes built for a couple of cars. The bass was very tight compared to ported designs I listened to. I don't know much about the origins of rock, sorry!

Check this graph out of the CHT-10 Looks like a mountain. Then look at the EX (the blue is the maximum extension mode). The Plus should actually be a little flatter even (the tuning is a little off on the EX), with extension down to about 18hz (instead of 16hz with the EX) in maximum extension mode. Meanwhile, that review lists the CHT-10 as having a -3db point of 32db. You would be going to a much more powerful 12" sub--bigger amp, bigger driver, bigger enclosure--in addition to going much deeper. I wouldn't be surprised if the Plus has a little better SQ, too.

So if you make the jump tomorrow (or now its today), you are getting a lot better sub
