I just got this pair of subs, but it appears that I just don't have the room to accommodate them.

Guess I'll have to sell them and get 2 PC Ultras instead. The pictures don't do justice to these subs, they are things of beauty.

Is that the oak or rosenut finish? Hard to tell from your photos.

ransac,

I believe that's the corrogated cardboard finish. Gee, didn't Ed just say they weren't doing custom finishes anymore??

Just a heads-up here: Ilkka has completed his test of the PB13 Ultra. Results are posted on the Shack. I won't give it all away here, but all you 13 Ultra owners can smile. A lot!

So my first sub ever is a 20-30 PC plus with the new 12.3 drivers. Ive had it about 9 months or so and i am pretty impressed, sometimes i am like Holey Cow. But not very often. I want to be like HOLEY COW!!! all the time.

Is the NEW PC Ultra a pretty big leap over the 20-39 Plus with 12.3?

Twice the money i kind of expect twice the performance even though that probably isnt possible.

Tweak is correct; in a bass reflex alignment the vents (Helmholtz resonators) damp woofer motion at/near the system tuning frequency. The deeper the tuning frequency, the more the woofer has to shoulder the output load before the resonators kick-in to assist in output.

This is why the deeper tunes generally show a reduction in headroom over the more common bass regions as compared to the higher tunes. Unless damped by a resonator, cone excursion quadruples with each successively deeper octave in order to maintain the same SPL.

Do you mind expanding on the changes and which subs they apply to?

It appears w/ this post all former testing has been nullified in comparisoon to current product.

So does anyone have a graph comparing the PC Ultra to the 20-39 plus 12.3?

F335, A graph will show some difference, but it won't be able to show you the audible difference in tonal quality that the new Ultra13 possesses.

Take a look at these sub tests and compare. The only problem is that the "Plus" tested here is not a 12.3, but it should be somewhat similar.

Edit: There used to be links here to tests on AV Talks, but I guess the powers that be do not want them here.

Yeah, but SVS started and has always banked a lot of what they say based on graphs.

Just so Ed does not miss it, I'd love to see a more detailed elaboration on the changes made to the current line. Are the 3rd party tests of older models still valid?

I thought it was interesting to see the new Ultra competing and beating a lot of DIY subs. Those DIY guys don't mess around.

I have a question. The Ultra 13 driver has a 3 inch excursion capability. How come the surround doesn't look very big. Compared to JL's W7 13, which has about the same excursion, the W7 13's surround looks a lot bigger. To someone who knows nothing about SVS, the Ultra 13 driver looks more like a driver that has a 1 inch excursion, not a 3 inch. Anybody know why?

So, does that mean that an early production PB 13 ultra won't be the same as a later production unit?

The design of the surround is different. The 13Ultra has what is referred to as a tall surround. That allows the cone to be larger, and yet still can allow long excursions.

The F113 also has a max excursion closer to four inches.

Theoretically at near it's excursion limits, the tall surround design starts to make sounds of it's own because it can begin to wrinkle. The regular fat half-round surrounds don't do that. As far as I know, that's the only downside. The 13Ultra seems to be an amp-limited design. That may keep the woofer from reaching it's extreme limits. I've pushed my Ultra pretty hard and haven't been able to cause it to make any bad sounds.
