would it better to have a 720 p movie with a bit rate of between 4-8 kbps or 1080p movie with a bit rate between 2-5 kbps? I notice on my ps3 when i play a 720p movie i ripped myself it says the kbps is running between 4-8, but the 1080 movie is playing 2-5kbps? What's the deal? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated.

The higher the bit rate the better the quality. Higher resolutions require more bandwidth and a higher rate, which if not high enough will introduce artifacts.
