For those interested in the potential influence of the PS3 and XBox 360 on the HD DVD/BD situation...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS) sold 604,200 of its new Wii video game consoles in the United States in December, beating Sony Corp. (6758.T)(NYSE:SNE - news), which sold 490,700 units of its new PlayStation 3, according to retail market research firm NPD.

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) sold 1.1 million Xbox 360 video game consoles to consumers in December. Microsoft's console debuted in November 2005, a full year ahead of the Wii and PS3, which were in short supply during the holidays, when the U.S. video game industry rings up about half of its annual sales.

The November numbers were

Xbox 360 - 511K
Nintendo Wii - 476K
PlayStation 3 - 197K

So, holiday season '06 makes that

Xbox 360 - 1,611K
Nintendo Wii - 1,080K
PlayStation 3 - 687K

It seemed like Microsoft must have really ramped up production for the holiday season. All the stores I went to during December had HUGE stack of them. Fry's even had 3 or 4 pallets full of them just sitting in the middle of the isle. I don't remember seeing quantities like that before.

Where are the Xbox HD-DVD add-on figures? The Xbox 360 is irrelevant (to the discussion) without the add on.

The 360 add-on sold 150k total.

I would normally agree, but since some on the forum what to view potential (every PS3 as a Blu-ray player which may sell movies...) then this could be potential also (every pre-installed Xbox 360 which may sell the most inexpensive entry into HD disc - the add on - which may sell movies...)

I'm assuming you're kidding, but if not, I don't agree. The PS3 plays blu-ray movies, the xbox 360 does not play HD-DVD movies (without the add-on).

It's not the same. You can't stick a high-def disk into the Xbox and watch it. You have to purchase an additional piece of hardware that's $200. With the PS3, it's already included, therefore, making it likely that someone will either view their free movie that they may have received, rent, or buy a Blu-ray title.

Everyone...look at the    Yes, I was kidding...it is a stretch I would never make...(I kinda thought the excessive smilies was a give away.)

That being said...not too many people on either side are realistic in some of the arguments and stances they take...including both sides of the PS3/Xbox 360 stuff.

THAT is the point of my post.

If it did, then it makes Toshiba's claim of 175k+ total (where the sentence included the add-on and laptops) in NA interesting. I am curious how confident you are in this number and whether you have any idea how that was split between NA and elsewhere.

The sales of PS3s has foisted a flood of blue-ray players on the market, so it is definitely important to watch those numbers. With luck, PS3 sales will slow considerably (possibly prompting a price decline).

However, sales of the 360 is relevant as well, as it is a small step from being HD-DVD capable (with addon). Knowing there were 1.6M 360s sold over the holidays is heartening, as there is the potential for those owners to move up to HD-DVD for <$200.

The Wii doesn't fit here, but was thrown in to show that it is selling better than PS3s.

Blu won :(
No big deal, I don't buy movies anymore anyway. Time to move on.

Sales are apparently disappointing in Japan as well:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/11/te...gy/11sony.html

We can't keep Wiis in our stores, said Naoko Ito, a spokeswoman for Bic Camera, one of Japan's largest electronics retailers. But we still have plenty of PlayStations.

Analysts also said they had expected a slow start for PlayStation 3 in all global markets, as production delays limited the number of machines available. But retailers and analysts said they had been surprised by just how tepid Japanese demand had been. They said the main reason consumers were shunning PlayStation 3 was its high price.

I'd still be interested also in seeing how many PS3's actually shipped into Japan, relative to their sell-through rate.

534,336 sold in Japan isn't bad at all to begin with (nearly doubles the 360 install base in two months), and if it's 534,336 sold vs 600k shipped... well, the sky's not falling just yet.

As far as the format competition goes, we know the 360 add-on is no threat to PS3's Blu-ray contribution in Japan, that's for sure.

I am an add-on owner (and an anti-Sonyite)...but, I sure can't argue with your statement here!

You do NOT have to buy an HDMI cable to watch BD disks in a PS3, unless your tv lacks other kinds of inputs. I don't think the high price alone is what slowed PS3 sales as much as the lack of gaming content. I fully expect the PS3 to sell well thoughout the summer as more and better titles get released. I don't know if they'll sell 10 million this year, but it'll sell just fine as long as they continue to get games out that look and play awesome (and perhaps pay to have some of them be exclusive).

Doesn't the PS3 have component outputs? I believe it does, so yes you can just stick a BD in the PS3 and watch it without buying an HDMI cable.

Does the PS3 come with a composite cable? That should get you properly started...

I wonder if any of these figures were revealed to the studios prior to CES 2007. And if they were informed of these fugures.... whether or not it would have changed their positions on being exclusive to either HD DVD or BR.

The 92K figure in this article appears to be for US sales only. I don't know what the worldwide sales are, or where the 150k figure is from.
