What scaling technique do you think would be comparible to the upconversion inside one of the HD-DVD players? I usually use lanczos in ffdshow when resizing standard def material so maybe that with some unsharp mask applied would be pretty close.

It would still look like garbage though. Edgier but still garbage.

I like the results of LanczosResize() in an AVISynth script running in FFDShow. You don't need to do the Resize step in FFDShow IMHO.

With that said, some people really like LimitedSharpenFaster() - but I find that a bit too edgy and may result in some aliasing effects.

Probably the best scaling is done in the Toshiba HD-DVD players - but I don't have one to check.

The Casino Royale DVD shots has been replaced. I tried using MPC but I see no video so I used PowerDVD temporarily.

The problem I'm not getting any video from Casino Royale DVD is because there is added protection Sony included in the disc. It runs when you have "autoplay" enabled in your OS (How lame ). Thats fixed now.

The dvd shots look a little better. The ones that were there before had some really bad color artifacts.

Having autoplay turned on with DVD and USB devices is pretty much an invitation to malware. I'm surprised there is not more general concern about this since it has been used for a number of brain dead copy protection schemes and viruses, including the infamous Sony root kit fiasco.

you can change it anytime by replacing the image urls in the script url behind the hd= and behind the sd= with the next pair of images you like.
the image should match in the frame positon and aspect ratio, otherwise the waggle will be real shakes. and let the images load for a while, tha waggling didn start until both images are fully loaded.

Nonsense. The Serenity images above are absolutely pristine. In fact, when one compares the detail to the SD version - for instance in with the "re-entry" scene - they are staggeringly crystal clear. Anyone can see this with their own eyes.

Casino Royale is what HD should look like! The source is perfect and with over 30 gigabytes in AVC, they have given it as much room as it deserves. Maybe there is still a little room left for improvement.

Wow - it's amazing that one can make statements like this. A look at the CR images above show OODLES of noise and speckling. There is a ton of grain in almost every shot. It is nowhere NEAR as clean and sharp as the Serenity shots.

It is possible that anyone who thinks the opposite may need to clean their PC's screen, but in all likelihood that is not the reason for not seeing the clear differences.

Great screens, Xylon. You should probably convert the dvd shots to pc levels like the HD shots but it's no biggie.

Check out the definition of the chainmail in the HD shot. Can't get that back with upconverting.

There's a better shot in KOH that trounces the DVD version. Balian is in the desert scenes.

No animals were harmed in the creation of this sentence.

Wow - lots of video noise in Kingdom of Heaven - especially in the dark scenes - and not nearly as crisp as the Riddick VC1 shots.

It's easy to see the inherent differences between Mpeg2 and VC1 in these shots.

I think the "noise" is part of the source = grain. You can´t directly compare a CG-heavy, stylish sleek film like Riddick to a historic movie like Kingdom of Heaven.

In my opinion Kingdom of Heaven looks awesome (pretty much on the same level as Riddick) and can match the better movies I have seem so far on HD DVD. If you ask me, it shows that MPEG2 can match VC1, if you give it a lot of space. 39 GB is pretty crazy big. Especially when you realize that Riddick is only half the size!

I´m from Austria so ignore bad spelling and grammar, please. :)
