d3code....

You are forgetting that the combo is NOW being used solely for new releases. NOT for 20-year-old movies we already have on DVD. I do not have Children of Men (my copy of it did not arrive yet). But buying it as a combo means that I'll be able to play it everywhere I want without buying a DVD version of it (something you HAVE to do with a blu-ray title if you want the same flexibility).

A long time ago, everybody realized that it was a waste to release combos of titles we already had. Maybe that was right.

So, you DO get something from today's combos you do NOT get from Blu-ray: the ability to play them everywhere (even on a Blu-ray player ).

And you should not talk based on prices because you know you can always get them cheaper.

cheaper? i live in holland for the moment. i need to import those titles. and combos suck donkey balls. i hate them. i dont want to spend 5 extra dollars on something i do not want. regardless on where i can play it.

it is like getting pamerla anderson for 20 bucks and i have to pay 5 extra dollars to get oprah winfried. even i do not want oprah winfried. even i could play oprah everywhere. i rather spend my time playing pamela anderson. but that is just me

What about the quality, who cares if you have a 1000 blu ray at 1 cent, if they are crap who cares?

It's going to take a while to reach price parity under this analysis . . . something like 100 years, with the Blu-ray attach rate being less than one movie per year per Blu-ray player out there!

(Sorry, couldn't resist the silliness. You'll reach price parity under this analysis as soon as you manage to buy 100 Blu-ray discs that you actually could have bought for five dollars more as a combo disc. But is this news? I ask you. )

look at it this way... one format could lose... at least HDDVD owners wont have unplayable discs on the other player... (dvd side will play on a Blu-ray player)... if HD wins... your blu-ray discs are... well, coasters....

about fox, what kind of stupid argument is that. fox doesnt release on hd-dvd so that makes the whole point already invalid for this thread.

i am comparing movies that are released on both formats. but where the bluray is $5 dollar cheaper then the HD-DVd just because it is a combo.

and i can tell you already. i am not the only 1 here that doesnt like combos. so if there is no option of chosing a combo yes or no. and bluray stays 5 dollar cheaper, then someone who wants to buy a new player for high def content might be cheaper out with bluray then hd-dvd,because of the combos that hd-dvd release.

But there are still plenty of Blu-Ray exclusives which cost $5 or $10 more than the cheaper Blu-Rays when comparing those to HD DVD combos. You have to look at the whole picture, not just a few dozen movies by Warner.

Spend the night with Pamela then go have a great day everywhere with Oprah! For just five more bucks.

It's a no-brainer!

This is a rather silly arguement. I hate combos and currently refuse to the buy them but the costs of ownership for both BD and HD media is to close for it to really matter. I have got some great discs on BD and HD for way less than $20 and I couldn't be happier. In time the cost will drop but the studios are going to try there hardest to keep prices up as long as they can, as early adopters we all know the price.

lol technicolor.

at least we europeans share a good dose of humor

bricktop.

i discovered though that with combo prices. i would be actually cheaper of when going for bluray if we take combo in the mix. that is my whole point. which a lot of you seem missing. if you have the choice in buying the bluray disc over the hd-dvd you could save $5. and yes it is small if it is only a few discs. but if it continues. it could actually save you a lot of money in the longrun. making bluray for yourself cheaper then hd-dvd. making the argument hd-dvd is cheaper then bluray invalid.

more clear i cant make it. well i could, if i speak it in my native language dutch

I have a few combos, but in general I avoid combos and will not buy it unless I absolutely must have the movie.

Chances are, by the time you get to 500 HDM in your collection, the price of BD players would be < $200. By the time, I get 1000 BDs in my collection, BD players will be around $100

But what percentage of the movies are combos and combos only. 15% Maybe with some movies being re-released as non-combos. It would take years at this race to hit $100 and that would imply That you both where buying every combo and B.) don't care about how much you spend because you keep buying crap, trust me there is going to be just as much crap as there are watchable movies.

You save your $500 by not buying combos. I'm perfectly happy saving well over $500 by never buying a Blu-ray player...

As far as I can tell, not buying combos means doing without certain titles.

Is the retail price of bluray really cheaper or are you counting on the fact that there's been quite a few disc sales? At best buy's web site I found most titles were $25, a few $20 titles. For HDDVD, the combo discs push the price up to $35, but again, AFAIK those combo discs aren't available in uncombo (heh is that word?) format.

Actually for anyone that cares, the release list in my sig link has listed every NA title released and announce for BR and HD. In it lists the MSRP of all titles, this clearly shows that averaged out HD DVD is clearly cheaper.

MSRP Averages:

Blu-ray: 33.54
HD DVD: 31.40

Difference: $2.14 per disc in HD DVDs favor.

I barely have 50 DVD's and I bought a DVD player in 1998, so I don't see how this rationalization will work for most people. Maybe enthusiast, but then they'll probably own both format players anyway.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read it.
