Data for week ending October 28, 2007

A. BD/HD DVD sales ratios
  • Week: 55/45
  • YTD: 64/36
  • SI: 60/40

What does that mean?
Week: During the week ending on the date shown above, of every 100 hidef disc units sold, 5 were Blu-ray and 45 HD DVD.
YTD (year-to-date): in the period from Jan 1, 2007, of every 100 hidef disc units sold, 64 were Blu-ray and 36 HD DVD.
SI (since inception): since the inception of both formats (April 2006 to the date shown above), of every 100 hidef disc units sold, 60 were Blu-ray and 40 HD DVD.

B. Top 10 hidef sellers

1. Transformers HD DVD 100.00
2. Heroes Season 1 HD DVD 47.91
3. Meet the Robinsons BD 44.88
4. Mr. Brooks BD 14.41
5. Hostel Part II BD 13.65
6. PotC: DMC BD 13.01
7. 300 HD 12.05
8. PotC CBP BD 11.61
9. 300 BD 11.26
10. Planet Earth HD 11.22

xx 2001 A Space Odyssey HD DVD 10.51
xx 2001 A Space Odyssey BD 10.40
xx Planet Earth BD 6.47

What does that mean?
The week's top seller is given a 'sales index' of 100. All other titles are given values relative to that. Hence if, e.g., title #2 has a value of 90, that means that for every 100 units of title #1 sold there were 90 units of title #2 sold.

Relative sales of dual-format simultaneous new releases

It has been argued that the sales of exclusive titles don't tell us much about the format war, and that we should look at the relative sales of titles that get released on both formats.

Code:

The primary source for this thread is Home Media Magazine which has been publishing Blu-ray vs HD DVD sales information since the year began.

To access the magazine, scroll down the page. On the left you'll see a box entitled "This Week's Digital Edition", and underneath the text "Read It Now! Click Here". Click that. Usually, the sales ratios are on page 3, and the top-sellers chart is in the "High-def" section.

From time to time, the Home Media Magazine research department publishes sales information based on Nielsen VideoScan data, augmented with information provided by the studios.

Actual sales figures

The percentages published weekly don't give us actual unit sales. However, some more specific information has been released during 2007:

1. Nielsen VideoScan report up to March 18

Sales in 2006: 297,041 Blu-ray/462,562 HD DVD

Hi again. Apparently the 2nd thread got derailed and was locked so here is thread #3.

Let me emphasize again the importance of sticking to the topic at hand.

Specially amazon tracking numbers, dvdempire sales percentages and other retailer indicators are not our primary topic.

Thank you for your cooperation.

BTW as a typical European I'm still officially away. Please behave in my absence.

I'll update the initial posts with the new figures as soon as possible during the weekend.

I'll start with a guess at 71:29 for next Friday. I think sales of 300 will swamp the other hd dvd and bd releases for last week, and they won't make much difference to the ratios.

I am going to have a less active roll here, so if someone else wants to track predictions that would be great.

I am going with 66:34, basically on the strength of Hot Fuzz helping the overall ratio be better for HD DVD than the 300 ratio alone.

BTW, the following are the releases from the week that we will get data for on Friday:

BD
300 (Warner)
IMAX: Blue Planet (Warner)
IMAX: Roving Mars (Disney)
Planet Earth (US Version) (Discovery Channel)
Shooter (Paramount)

HD DVD
300 (Warner)
Darkman (Universal)
Hot Fuzz (Universal)
IMAX: Blue Planet (Warner)
Planet Earth (US Version) (Discovery Channel)
Sea of Love (Universal)
Shaun of the Dead (Universal)
Shooter (Paramount)

Well let's see the dvdempire 1 week delay method has been within a few % points for awhile now. For some reason they would have HD DVD at 46% this week, but that seems too high.

I'll go with 59:41.

Once again, I'm going for 63:37. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

Here is my prediction for the week of 300:

1. 300 Blu-ray
2. 300 HD DVD
3. Shooter Blu-ray
4. Hot Fuzz
5. Shooter HD DVD
6. Planet Earth Blu-ray
7. Bourne Identity
8. Casino Royale
9. Apocalypto

10. Planet Earth HD DVD

Ratio: 67:33 Blu-ray

Im going to guess 68/32 with the 300 BD remaining strong in the following weeks and probably also strong on HD DVD put tapering off on HD DVD sooner.

70/30 blu-ray

Blu-ray discs - 154
HD-DVD - 0

FACT: 90% of the industry is blu-ray, few are hd-dvd.

FACT: Paramount paid 150m, sabotage by MS.

FACT: consumers have spoken, they chose blu-ray over 2-1.

63:37 for Blu. All bets are off from October through the end of the year, but this could be the closest HD DVD gets for awhile.

I'm going to guess that it's 67:33 only because there's rumors that the 300 ratio was 65:35 for BD:HD. Don't know if this is real

Assuming also that rumor of 300 sold 250K total is real, meaning 162k BD-300 vs 88k HD-300, I assume the rest of the movies can only swing things a couple more points for BD.

So 67:33 is my guess.

So 67:33 is my guess.

65:35 for 300 would represent a move FORWARD for Blu-ray.

The ratio was 62:38 for The Departed, previously the #1 selling title.

You also have to account for the whole mix of titles this week, which innately favors HD DVD.

I think that 65:35 would be great for the week. Please put me down for this.

Gonna stay with my prediction from the last thread of 65:35, but could see it as high as 70:30, probably somewhere in between.

An idustry source who wishes to remain private has told me it is 65-35 for Blu-ray.

This doesn't surprise me, but the overall sales number is much larger than I thout it would be.

so it can be 162.500 : 87500 for BD, so almost 2:1

nice, very nice
can't wait for friday numbers

I'll reiterate my previous prediction of 70:30, though Hot Fuzz has sold better than I expected. I don't think it will make a large dent because of availability problems.

I agree with the reasoning and also go 66:34 Blu-ray for the week. I sincerely hope HD-DVD proves me wrong and gets an above-average showing.
