Seriously. Do we have to do this here?

2.8M BD players indeed. I call them gaming consoles but whatever...

Way to get a good thread locked.

well if we are doing this . 2.8m is far less than the 10m the studios were promised.

I'm also not to sure that the hardware partners in bluray are happy that there are 2.8m ps3s over night . Eats into their profits (if there are any)

This is a thread about new releases, yet you constantly attempt to get it locked or deleted by going off-topic with your pro-BD rhetoric and your incessant obsession with Spielberg titles. Spielberg and Lucas never release their classics (ET, Star Wars, etc) on a format until there are several million players. END OF STORY! We don't need an official statement from either of these men to tell us what we already know by history. 'nuff said.

As for your boasts about 1.1 compliant PS3's -- big deal! It only took 18 months for the BDA to have a (nearly) fully-functional player on the market which should have been the norm since the launch. And the handful of players ranging from $800 - $1500 that suckers scooped up over the past year-and-a-half are also obsolete overnight, as they will never be fully functional players. Yippee!

Now keep this thread on topic, because I enjoy the new movie / potential disc discussions. Thank you.

A Universal executive told us point blank that legally they didn't need Spielberg's permission to release some of his movies, and IIRC that included Jaws. In fact, Spielberg's stuff was on Universal's internal HD DVD release slate at one point.

However, they decided not to release it on HD DVD at this time because the few bux generated by the movie this early on in the format war would not compensate for the bad blood generated by p!ssing off Spielberg. IOW, they don't need permission for at least some of his movies, but they would still most definitely like to have his blessing, cuz Spielberg is a very powerful guy in the industry.

I don't know about Jurassic Park.

P.S. Please stop the Blu-ray installed base blather. Otherwise we're gonna get this thread locked.

First I had to read through all that off topic FUD, and then I came to the first line of this post. It made me laugh.

So what does anyone know about Handcock. It comes out in June, so is a big summer release, and had Angelina J in it...which can't hurt.

mr. black is correct in one regard: it is a "big deal" that blu-ray has more 1.1 compliant players than HD-DVD...(NOTE: mr. black, not I, posted this "big deal" remark, i'm replying to it, not posting it, before someone says i'm getting off topic)

mr. black then makes off-topic sarcastic remarks about blu-ray before saying "keep this thread on-topic"...ahhhhhhhhhhh

As the thread starter, I would also like you to quit, your behavior shows just what is bad about this format war and that is coming from a Blu-Ray owner.

The list of movies is interesting, and I'm sure there will be a few sleeper hits to add to it in the coming months, but discussions of which format has the release advantage are a bit premature right now, as it seems probably that one or more studios may alter their stance in the first half of 2008, which could radically change the release landscape.

Be a Reality fanboy.

Not good opening weekends for these two:
5. "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," $9.35 million.
8. "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," $4.1 million.

Since musicals don't fare very well, I would say Mama Mia doesn't have a chance either (I did see it in Toronto, before it went to Broadway, and it was a lot of fun).

The problem with Sweeney Todd is it is only in 1,249 theaters, while the top four movies are in a lot more, for example-

#1) National Treasure: Book of Secrets-3,832 Theater Count-$11,873 per screen Average.

#2) I Am Legend-3,620 Theater Count-$9,454 per screen Average.

#3) Alvin and the Chipmunks-3,499 Theater Count-$8,288 per screen Average.

#4) Charlie Wilson's War-2,575 Theater Count-$3,735 per screen Average.

#5) Sweeney Todd-1,249 Theater Count-$7,485 per screen Average.

#8) Walk Hard-2,650 Theater Count-$1,547 per screen Average.

Walk Hard, with a $35 million budget and doubtful for a big Foreign Box Office, is just a plain flop.

I still don't think Sweeney Todd will do that well.

I hope Disney goes neutral sometime soon also, because National Treasure 2 is a mvoie I am looking forward to. I think you are right that it will pass 200m.

As for Speed Racer, I am just disappointed (and I have not seen it yet?). I loved the cartoon as a kid, but hated the trailer.

Bottom line is that HD DVD will have bigger special effect films coming out in 2008, which is what they did not have in 2007. Universal themselves had comedy and drama releases for summer of 2007. You can clearly see what type of movies sell big on all formats. this is what really helped Blu-ray out in October, November and December. Catalog titles such as Gladiator, Scarface and Braveheart will also help out HD DVD if released for 2008. 2008 should be very interesting and even more confusing for the consumer when they see such big titles coming out on both formats.

After seeing Sweeney Todd, I completely understand why they didn't open it wider. I enjoyed it overall, but I don't consider it a mainstream movie, and I expect it to drop off a fair amount. Opening day was much better than Charlie Wilson's War, but now it is lower and I think the gap will widen between those two. Sweeney Todd could end up being one of those cult classics on disc, where some people totally love it, but the appeal is never that widespread. As far as the box office, I even wonder if the relatively little movie Juno from Fox Searchlight will end up with a higher box office than Sweeney Todd in the US. Juno was at about 1/4th the theaters over the weekend and then expanded to 998 on Christmas, beating Sweeney Todd each day for Per-Theater-Average, from the estimates I've seen.

Sorry, AJ isn't in it. However Will Smith and Charlize Theron are. It has the coveted 4th of July opening. Here is the trailer:

I was excited when I heard about it but it looks like it is just going to be a comedy (Incredibles rip off if you ask me, though there are worse things you could rip off). Should be a monster hit. Family superhero comedy movie + Will Smith + 4th of July = Huge Box Office.

I confused Hancock with Wanted. It was Wanted I was curious about, but I just saw a trailer for it. It looks like a superhero-hit man type movie.

Yeah I wasn't as impressed with the trailer but it seems like a cool premise. Assassin's that can break some rules of physics Matrix-style.

Wow, Alvin the Rodents is up to $150 million. What is it with fury little vermin this year? I would have thought the Water Horse would do better, but it only made about 9 million.

I can't wait to see how "There will be Blood" does when it opens up to more theaters. I think the name is a little mis-leading and it may hurt the film.

Oh, and National Treasure 2 is kicking butt. That should do well fo Blu.

The fact that Alvin and his miscreant comrades have achieved such box office success is a blight on the movie industry. Now we will have to stomach these infernal rodents for holidays to come.

Actually, I think the title is quite descriptive of the type of movie it is. I think it would strive for No Country for Old men figures and die out at 20% of Alvin and the Chipmunks despite great praise from reviewers. If DDLewis can reprise his role from Gangs of NY I will be thrilled. That was one of the finest acting performances I remember ever seeing. Similar character type and time frame here.

NT2 will continue to do well but there are a number of movies coming out soon and it will slow and finish around 195-210. It is also very mediocre. I won't miss it and if I manage to go purple before then I certainly won't get it.

I think Alvin in particular benefitted from the lack of entry from Pixar and Dreamworks animation this holiday season. One of them has released over the holidays for the past umpteen years it seems. With kids on break it is a great time to release kiddy fare.

Ther was a great interview with the director (There will be Bllod) on NPR. He talked about the boy in the film and how his parents were told he would be spending a lot of time with DD Lewis. Before they would let their son sign on, they wanted to find out who this Daniel Day guy was, so they rented one of his films...Gangs of New York. They director joked that they almost pulled their son out. Luckily he found a copy of The Age of Innocence for them to view and then they approved.

I wish I would have heard that. I really think DDL is criminally overlooked. He needs to do more movies. He has only done 9 movies since 1989 (and not a bad one in the lot, with one best actor oscar). Thats a bad month for Samuel Jackson (except for the oscar part). I for one am looking forward to it.

Several times offered and turned down the role of Aragorn (Strider) in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy. -OOPS

After Michael Madsen was found to be unavailable for the part, Day-Lewis tried to get the role of Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction (1994), one of the few times he actively pursued a part. However, by that point in the casting, Quentin Tarantino had John Travolta in mind for the part.
