Great, now I have to wait for "The Dark Knight" to be released overseas and pay a premium.

Hopefully they will release I Am Legend before that date.

Still quite a few movies from Paramount and Universal that look promising! I don't think it will be over for a while.

Yeah! Blu-ray is gonna be so awesome!!!1

Is #4 even an issue if WB uses PCM audio on their releases? If New Line goes Blu-ray exclusive and continues only offering up DTS HD-MA tracks, then yes it does become a concern.

Now Fox can delay all they want, and keep jacking their prices, Blu won! I still say competition is best.

The format war is over guys...get over it. Blu-ray has my full support because if we want HDM to succeed, we need to support the one format that can challenge DVD.

The war was fun, now time to actually build up adoption of the world's true next generation high definition optical disc format...Blu-ray.

How will this impact imports? I have no problem if HD-DVD becomes obsolete in the US since I can still watch my current library no matter what, but I'm curious how this will effect foreign markets.

Here's hoping that there's a fire sale for HD DVDs.

If this is true, I don't see how they could possibly pitch exclusivity to HD DVD to a studio after Warner has made their move. Other studios were likely to follow Warner, not go the opposite direction.

Yeah, that DVD monopoly sure was bad for the home video market!

The interesting thing about this now is, what happens to sales of Paramount/Dreamworks and Unversal HD DVDs? Even the most ardent HD DVD supporters are likely to be hesitant to purchase new discs in light of this news. How long do they (studios) stand pat?

Figures! Just when I buy a Toshiba HD-A2 for Xmas, the format goes bye-bye.

At least it was only a $98 experiment.

I'm glad a clear winner is emerging.

Now to get a PS3.

This almost extends the war in my eyes. We have to wait at least another year for paramount to release on blu and I am not going to go out and buy a blu ray player for $300 with all my HD DVDs. I will have to wait for a dual format player to come down in price.

If some blu studio goes neutral, then where are we at???

The HD DVD group is going to be a pretty somber bunch at CES. I wonder how this will be spun.

Frankly, this is a sad day for consumers.

My A2 works far better than my S300, and Sony is famous for running prices up when it can get away with it - as it will now with license fees and the like.

Add to that, the company's desire to control every consumer's use of the media, and the evil empire will have prevailed.

Oh well!

Time to start shifting to media download services (and I mean lawful ones, for those fanboys who would try to interpret matters otherwise.)

Maybe we'll have cost-effective HDM in the next decade sometime.

I agree. If indeed hddvd's death is imminent, blu-ray still has an even tougher time ahead against DVD. rock bottom prices for both hardware and software is not going to be easy to beat.

Thank God.

The technically superior format won. I didn't actually think it would be possible considering the industry's history of choosing the inferior, cheaper format over the superior, more expensive format (VHS vs. Betamax springs to mind here). But in the end the overwhelming advantage of studio and CE manufacturer support defeated the forces of low bitrates and macroblocking.

I still have a couple of HD DVD orders pending from Amazon, but they are Universal. I wonder if I should cancel them and wait for the inevitable Blu-Ray versions, or go ahead and get them anyways. One of them is Children of Men and I was really looking forward to seeing that one.

Tonight I will DEFINATELY be putting up my HD-DVD add-on onto e-bay. Wow, I am sure people on e-bay are not quite as informed as we are here. Hope it sells at a decent price!!!! Thank the Lord I didn't buy too many hd-dvds.

I was kinda' in "wait and see" mode to see what HD DVD would announce at CES . . . but Dave's comment pretty much seals the deal (for me), as I suspect that if anything promising for HD DVD was coming at CES, Dave would have at least caught wind of it . . .

I'm bummed (I don't own a HDM player of any type) . . . this means I will now need to wait until there is a reasonably priced Profile 2.0 player which I'm guessing is probably at least a year away.

Sad but true. HD-DVD may stick around for a while if this is indeed true.
Maybe another 1-2 years?
I wonder how long I will keep my HD-DVD players connected along with my Blu Ray players?
