LAS VEGAS -- SONY'S WIN WITH its Blu-ray format for high-definition DVD this week could signal a turning point for the company.

All this week, consumer electronics firms have had perhaps their best shot to convince Wall Street's bean counters they'll be on top in 2008.

As the Consumer Electronics Show has unfurled across hotel suites and conventions halls here, analysts are dazzled by the seemingly endless progress offered by wave upon wave of new gadgets.

While it's best to be skeptical of that warm fuzzy feeling, it's hard to deny that one company, Sony, seems to be on something ...

On as side note, Sony stock SNE on Nasdaq rose over $3 to $57.19, close to 52 week high. Congratulations to SNE shareholders.

SNE shareholders ( ME ) don't care if the stock rose $3 unless we plan on shortselling. The stock can go down $10 the next day with one bit of bad news *earnings*. I care about EPS.

Sony is the largest benefactor of Blu Ray's success. I thought that was pretty much common knowledge.

i dont care about sony.

i care about innovating, new and exciting products

and sony is one of the only few companies who have the balls to come out with something new and try to make it work.

UMD maybe failed but at least sony tried to come up with something new.

PSP. just look what is possible now with it because of firmware updates. never imagined it would go that far. specially since i was thinking it is suicide to compete against nintendo in the handheld business. yet sony find a way to do pretty well.

Walkman, minidisc. that new 11 inch tv that is a few papers thick

the PS3 is the most incredible multimedia piece of hardware i laid my eyes on and i cant wait to see what programmers will do with the cell processor. as well as where the cell will be used more for products.

and that is why i like sony. they take risk come out with new innovating stuff. it does not always pan out like with betamax or umd, minidisc. but they keep on trying and that is what i like.

just imagine if there was no sony, we could have missed out on a lot of exciting products.

now we only have to wait for the people coming here, saying how bad sony is because of the rootkit.

Nice. I agree, but so few people seem to see it that way.

Their major corporation can sell a rock with a their logo and still sell and I am not
saying it as a bad thin. They also can't maintain a constant product, they are always
out with the old in with the new. Curse the day they stopped production of RPTV
and their almost perfect CRT Trinitron. But hey, they are still making money despite the
console wars. Their revenue on 2006 was $64 Billion and now it's up to $70 Billion.

There is always someone out there that gives you opinion of a product that they don't even own.

Keep in mind that HD DVD was planing a big in your face we won the war party. BD stayed fairly low keyed about winning. Looks like BD had a little more class on that one count.

That is truly one of the funniest (and silliest) comments I have ever seen at AVS. Sony failed with Beta video; they failed with SACD, and they have yet to make Blu-Ray "work" as well as HD-DVD. Their success with BR is directly tied to their ability to literally buy (as in "bribe") retail and studio support. Sony did not invent plasma TV (which explains why they don't like it - no royalties there), nor did they invent DVD-Audio (again they shun it - no royalties). Their only real success was the CD which they co-invented with Philips, but those royalties no longer flow which is why they are so desperate for a new source of royalties, and why they are willing to violate laws and ethics to get that new (royalties) fix through BR!

"The truth is out there!"

But Blu-ray isn't Sony. That's what they keep telling us anyway.

UMD failed as a movie format for two reasons - one, it was just as expensive as DVD with no gain outside of portability and two, the ONLY place to play them was on a PSP. It wasn't a terrible idea, just poorly thought out and executed.

On the root kit thing... Sigh... I know executives and business types. They don't know enough about technology to have had an understanding of a root kit. My guess? They went out seeking an anti-piracy implementation, found a company with some success, paid them the licensing fee to use it, and then the stuff hit the fan. While it's certainly possible, I think it's giving the suits WAY too much credit for tech savvy to think that they knew what was going on with the root kit.

It isn't. Sony is just the most high profile supporter of the format because of the PS3. They also have the most to lose if it fails for the same reason. And, consequently, have the most to gain if it wins.

Sony is kind of like the QB for Blu-ray. They get more credit when things are good and more blame when things are bad.

If you consider pushing expensive formats on people for decades as innovative, then yeah I see your point.

Now people are bickering over press releases?

Who cares!

Certainty and conviction are a sure sign you don't know what you're talking about! The world is not black and white, rather shades of grey!

As far as ethics are concerned, both camps were about as unethical as you can get, but can you please explain what law(s) they broke?
