I played around with XBMC but it lacks the elegance of an Apple TV. I'm apprehensive to pick up an ATV as its low horsepower (1080p) and MKV playback over Perian is weak.

I am pleased to have discovered ATV4MAC. They've engineered a nice installer of 2.02 ATV software on a 10.4.8+ install (no leopard.) The installer replaces FrontRow. Pick it up here: http://www.macgeekblog.com/blog/arch...available.html

Be sure to go to the forums: http://forum.macgeekblog.com/viewforum.php?f=4 for fixes for the remote and a trick to allow 1080p resolution.

Finally fully functional ATV on my MBP running 1080p MKV with AC3 (yes ATV4Mac includes ATVfiles)

@dizziness -

I haven't taken the time to downgrade a machine to Tiger yet to try ATV4Mac, but had been planning on trying it soon. Can you answer a question or two?

1 - Can you play Video_TS files, or only movies that are shared via iTunes?

2 - Rentals? Of HD movies?

Thanks,
Andras

1) Anything Perian can play. 1080p plays just barely on my MBP. If the folks @ Perian could offer the drop frame tweak we use in VLC, then it would be flawless. Yes, it plays movies shared in iTunes but includes ATVFiles, a plug in to play anything via quicktime.

2) Rentals apparently work, although I did not try. Folks in the forums suggest HD Rentals have issue.

Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at ATVFiles to make sure that I can access my shared storage for VIDEO_TS rips.
