Hi, right now I have been using my Mini with 2.1 audio through a 3.5mm to red and white, and I want a way to hook up my mini to my receiver and get 5.1. I have tons of BluRays and TV shows with 5.1, but I am only getting 2.1 right now. Here is my Mini: http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...009-specs.html

Here is my receiver: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...53899372,d.aWc

Thanks!

fix your links, both are bad. Likely all you need is an optical cable with a minijack adaptor tip:

(added direct links)

it's hard to say what options you have. At a minimum, what was said above. Just make sure to change your sound drivers in the settings to digital if it's not autodetected. I have done this with my last 2009 Mac Mini in both OSX and Windows 7 and Windows 8

If you have newer mac mini, and a appropriate AVR, you may be able to use HDMI. Maybe even get 7.1.

I have had the VLC player lock my connection, even after killing the connection to 2.1 before on the optical output. Not once either, nor am I totally sure why. Either way just required a reboot of the mac mini and everything worked again.

So far VLC was the only app I found that sent the 5.1 information, and output in midi/hardware control goes to digital.

Have you tried XBMC?
