I am pleased to announce that MythTV 0.27 is now available for Mac OS X via MacPorts*.

MythTV is an open source software system that enables your Mac (OS X 10.5 or later) to be a digital video recorder and media centre. Key features:
  • Watch and record digital TV, including HDTV.
  • Pause, skip, and rewind live TV shows.
  • Completely automatic commercial detection/skipping, with manual correction via an intuitive cutlist editor.
  • Intelligently schedules recordings to avoid conflicts.
  • Schedule and administer many functions remotely via a web browser.
  • Multiple user interface themes to choose from plus artwork and metadata downloaded from web sources.
  • Flexible client/server architecture allows multiple frontend client machines to access content served by one or more backend servers (although the most common installation consists of a single computer running both the client and server together).

On OS X, however, the choice of tuner hardware is limited but does include SiliconDust's popular HDHomerun series. Also, Myth cannot support digital rights management and therefore certain channels may not be available. Typically these are premium cable company channels such as HBO, etc. Note, too, that PPC machines are not supported nor are older Core Solo Macs (pre 2007).

Myth has been available on OS X for over 7 years but primarily as a frontend connecting to a backend running on Linux. With MacPorts, the goal is to make it as easy as possible to run the complete Myth system (frontend and backend) on Macintosh. Presently, you still have to enter a few commands via the Terminal but cookbook-style instructions are provided. The following wiki pages provide more details:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MacPorts
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Building_Myth_for_Mac_with_MacPorts

MythWeb.27 should be updated on MacPorts very soon.

Craig

*MacPorts is a package manager application that brings thousands of opensource software packages, including MythTV, to Mac OS X. Pre-compiled binaries are available for current OS X versions where permissible.

Sorry about that! It appears the faac port was modified (along with a tonne of other ports) at just about the same time as you attempted the install. Try:
Code:
sudo port clean faac

followed by:
Code:
sudo port selfupdate

and then have another go at installing Myth. Worst case, wait an hour while the changes propagate through the MacPorts servers and try the above again.

Building llvm-gcc42?

What version of OS X are you using and which version of XCode do you have installed? For good measure, which model Mac are you installing on? The llvm compiler suite should already be installed on any platform where it would be needed.

Could you please confirm that you did the following steps after installing XCode?
  • (from http://www.macports.org/install.php)
  • Apple's Command Line Developer Tools are found at the Apple Developer site, or they can be installed from within Xcode 4 and 5. Users of Xcode 3 or earlier can install this by ensuring that the appropriate option(s) are selected at the time of Xcode's install ("UNIX Development", "System Tools", "Command Line Tools", or "Command Line Support").
  • Xcode 4 and later users need to first accept the Xcode EULA by either launching Xcode or running:
  • xcodebuild -license

Craig
(Apple's changed the process of obtaining the Command Line Tools a couple of times; can be very confusing.)

I just installed the Command Line Tools after your latest post, might have been reinstallation. Not sure. Obtained through webpage link in Xcode menu.

Wow, nothing is going right for you...even fetching/checking a source code zip! wink.gif Are you behind a restrictive firewall?

Possibly the file was temporarily unavailable? You might try:
Code:
sudo port clean mysql5

and then try to install myth again.

Could you please provide the following log file:

/opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_tarballs_ports_databases_mysql5/mysql5/main.log

I think you should be able to attach the file here (paperclip icon). If not, please open a ticket on the MacPorts issue tracker and we'll deal with it there.

Great. One of the servers that mirrors files for MacPorts has gone away. I've posted to the macports-users mailing list to determine how to handle this. Hold tight.

BTW, MacPorts tries to pick the 'closest' mirror site and you were directed to easynet.be. Whereabouts are you located?

Looking a little more closely, this is a MySQL mirror, not MacPorts. It is still weird that it chose a mirror in Belgium, though. You can clean and try again--maybe MySQL will direct you to a closer mirror. Hopefully one that is actually working!

If you really want to proceed, you can download the required file manually, and put it where MacPorts expects it, by doing the following:

Go to

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.1.html#downloads

Select

Version 5.1.72
Platform Source code **

Download
Generic Linux (Architecture independent), Compressed Tar Archive **

Click Download

then click "No thanks, just start my download"

Move the file to

/opt/local/var/macports/distfiles/mysql51

Then proceed with installing Myth.

Can't find the architecture independent version. Placing the 64bit version yields checksum errors. Noted in error message that myth 27 installer is looking for this file "mysql5-5.1.72_0.darwin_13.x86_64.tbz2" which doesn't exist on the servers. They have darwin_12 but not darwin_13

Attempting to fetch mysql5-5.1.72_0.darwin_13.x86_64.tbz2 from http://packages.macports.org/mysql5

You also can't just click on link, have to connect to the "http://packages.macports.org" then find the folder

You have to change the "Select Platform" pop-up menu to "Source Code" to show the appropriate download file (which will then be at the bottom of the list).

The "Attempting to fetch..." lines you've quoted are MacPorts checking to see if a pre-compiled binary (built by MacPorts) is available. The terms of the license for MySQL 5.1.72 are such that MacPorts has to build it from source; hence we need the source code tarball. We can't use the pre-compiled binaries from MySQL as they would install in the 'wrong' place and not be accessible by other MacPorts tools. Myth access the database via Qt's MySQL plugin and also allows access via Perl and Python scripts. MacPorts provides all these bits of software.

BTW, much of the software on MacPorts IS available as a pre-compiled binary for 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 and therefore installs much more quickly than if everything has to be built from source. Unfortunately, that's not going to help you right now in installing on Mavericks. Apple supports the MacPorts project with hosting and other hardware but I don't know when they'll set up the Mavericks builder.

When you do get the build going, I'd be interested in how long it takes. I've never done a build from the ground up without some parts being delivered pre-compiled. At least you have a fairly healthy machine to do the work!

Well, you exposed a boo boo* in a change that was made to the Qt4-mac port yesterday. The maintainer has pushed a fix this morning and it takes around a half hour to propagate through the servers, so by 09:30 ET this morning, it should be available. To get it, run:
Code:
sudo port selfupdate

Then have another go at installing Myth. Note that Qt4-mac is HUGE and may take 1 hour+ to build.

Appreciate your patience in working through these glitches.

Craig

* The line
Code:
} elseif {${MINOR} = "9"} {
should have been:
Code:
} elseif {${MINOR} == "9"} {

One of the Myth devs tells me that he had a similar problem and solved it by downloading and installing the XCode Command Line Tools from Apple's Developer Connection website rather than having XCode do the install. You will have to register for a (free) ADC membership in order to get access to:

https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action

BTW, folks on the macports-dev list noted that there has always been a new release of the Command Line Tools for each new release of XCode but that the tools sometimes lag by a few days. You've got the brand new version of XCode but the Tools related to XCode 5.0.1. Conceivably, that is part of the issue.

Well, I did a fresh install of Mavericks, XCode and MacPorts...and the build failed in the exact same spot as you. From some googling, it appears that the underlying issue is related to the Command Line Tools version and affects several bits of software. It is _possible_ that people upgrading to Mavericks (rather than doing a clean install) _might_ not experience this problem. I don't have enough time to try that route.

I'm created a ticket in the MacPorts Tac system. I'm crossing my fingers that Apple will update the Command Line Tools and fix this...

I would like to comment on the errors that Joseph was having as I was having the exact same problems.  However, my situation is only a little different since the machine I installed MacPorts on to install MythTV is still Mountain Lion.  I was able to remove the most recent version of Xcode which was 5.0.2 which also removed the command line tools that I installed from the preferences window.  I then logged into my developer account (created a while back just to access certain things) and I download Xcode 4.6.2 from April 2013 along with the Command Line tools package from April.

I tried re-installing the mythtv package again and things are building and installing correctly.  Mysql was downloaded and built correct and it's now working on the rest of the dependencies.  I will report back if there are any additional errors or problems, but it's looking good now.

I don't think this is an option for Joseph though, since he said he was on Mavericks.  Xcode 4.6.2 probably won't install on Mavericks.  I suppose it's worth a shot if all other options are failing.

[Edit]Installation completed with no errors.  I won't be able to confirm that everything runs correctly tonight as it's been a LONG day and I'm headed off to be.  Looks like the Apple command line tools was the issue for sure.  I wish Joseph some luck with this install.[/Edit]

Thanks for the report. Just yesterday, I was setting up a new 2012 Mini (Core i5) running 10.8.5 with XCode 5.0.2, freshly installed. Built and installed the MySQL database and Myth software from scratch without an error or hiccup.

Regarding Mavericks, it does appear that there is currently a mismatch or bug with the current XCode Command Line Tools. Several MacPorts packages are failing to build with much the same errors reported. I think this one is in Apple's hands to fix. Either that, or somebody much smarter than me!

Mavericks problems are now fixed. The main issue is too arcane to go into here but MythTV now builds successfully on OS X 10.9.

Thanks. It is now built. Getting stuck working on the starting backend

mysql5 -u root -p < /opt/local/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

I've tried the user password, machine root password, and "myth" all with same error

Based on step through guide from here:

Try
Code:
mysql5 -u root < /opt/local/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql

When set up from scratch, there is no password for the root user on the MySQL database.

So, you must have set a password for root and forgotten it? You can try:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/resetting-permissions.html

However, if you don't have anything recorded in your database, another approach is to blow it away and start again. I *think* the following will work but I haven't tested it--I don't want to nuke my database!
Code:
sudo port deactivate mysql5-server mysql5
# removes the MacPorts MySQL software from /opt/local

ls -l /opt/local/var/db/mysql5
# check for remaining databases, should have directories for mysql and test; maybe mythconverg

echo DANGER WILL ROBINSON !
sudo rm -ri /opt/local/var/db/mysql5/*
# wipe out the remaining contents, NO UNDO, don't mess up the spelling. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

sudo port activate mysql5-server mysql5
# reinstall the software, should be very fast

Now start over with the install...

i'm running the f/e on my mini core duo, but it cannot play smoothly unless nothing else is running:-\ yes, i know my h/w is woefully underpowered;-) but eyetv & vlc have no problem playing smoothly when for example i'm screensharing in from my laptop, playing mtv's recordings on an nfs mount/gig ethernet. right now i'm doing port upgrade outdated while watching live tv w/minor choppiness;-)

i'm not familiar w/how the f/e communicates w/ the b/e, but it seems it's much less efficient than eyetv/nfs...i can watch 2 live tv windows simultaneously & smoothly. and when there is minor choppiness, the sound is unbroken. myth f/e drops sound when it can't keep up w/video, making it unsat:-\

Are you using mythtv-core.25 from MacPorts or the .app bundle (which version)?

What is the source of the recordings that don't play smoothly? North American broadcast? 1080i or 720p? If 1080i, check which deinterlacer you're using; some add a lot of overhead.

I think it is more likely that EyeTV is better optimized for 32-bit Mac environments since that is what was current when it was being actively developed! Myth on OS X works quite well on Core2 Duo or later machines. The mythfrontend log may also give some clues as to why a particular recording does not play smoothly.

the .app bundle: v0.27-1-g5b917e8, as i've already gone to 0.27 on the backend (which i built under linux) so it _can_build on i386;-)

the "port upgrade outdated" just finished (>6hrs;-) and the "port install mythtv-core.27" of course won't build:
Code:
Error: mythtv-core.27 cannot be installed for the configured build_arch 'i386' because it only supports the arch(s) 'x86_64'.

any chance i can get -arch i386 working?

why a particular recording does not play smoothly.

so where can i find the mythfrontend.app log? of course it wouldn't be in /var/log/mythtv;-}
