Hey,

I used to use a HTPC back in 1999 and early 2000's.

For the longest time I had no use for one though.

However, I recently picked up a AppleTV first Gen at a garage sale for $5. I added a graphics accelerator card and installed a custom version of linux called CrystalBuntu.

So,... it's my HTPC. I have all my CDs on there as Apple Lossless Files and my DVD collection as MKV. I don't use popular XBMC add ons ... Just use it as a media server and for that it's PERFECT. (For me.)

that's kind of wild. what exactly is a graphics accelerator for an atv and how did you connect it?

I used the card you see on this page...

http://www.crystalbuntu.com/

It's small... there's another similar card twice as large but it's less good.

If you look at ATV1's on Ebay you will note many of the sellers advertising crazy features like the ability to watch any movie or tv show instantly and access to every TV channel. These "plug ins" are easy to find and install but they are buggy and the video quality is terrible. (In my experience.)

On the other hand if you just want to serve up your own media from a attached or networked hard drive .... that works and that's what I do.

I suppose I use it like a Western Digital TV Live but I haven't had one of those ... that's just the idea behind how mine is setup.

He paid $5. Not bad for what he's getting.
