I read that the new Front Row 2 in Leopard (which happens to look just like the Apple TV interface) plays back VIDEO_TS folders natively.

w00t!

Now if only the Apple TV would do the same...

i got 2 questions:

1. How to get this to play on second monitor only? I dont want to change the primary display, and i dont want to mirror....i just want it to show on the second monitor. Damnit apple...how hard could this be when EVERY ht app has this.

2. i have perian installed....and all my videos play perfect in QT, QuickLook, etc. But only some of them play in Front Row, while others dont. Any ideas why ? i just get black screen for half my movies even though QT plays fine.

Fun Front Row Tip #1

Place an image in the same folder that contains your VIDEO_TS folder and name it "Preview.jpg"...

I have not gotten Leopard yet but this is indeed disappointing. I actually am a "free" developer (ADC) and I submitted a bug report about this and they actually closed it saying that it is already covered by anoher bug tracker and that it is fixed!! Oh well.

After installing Leopard this morning I played around with Front Row. I really like it but it looks too much like MCE. Anyway, I'm not near my apple now but does anybody know if Frontrow will play iso files or will AppleTV?

it seems like the only way to add details / artwork to movies for front row is through itunes. problem with that is itunes accepts hardly any video file types.

if apple wants to pursue this HT areana...they really need to step up to the plate and allow other file types and other options for customization. this should be basic stuff before they get too advanced.

i just realized that itunes = backstage, and front row = centerstage.

apple is a bit ahead of the centerstage folks in terms of design and UI....but the functionality is lacking big time. if only i can use backstage with front row.

Wonder if this might apply to non VIDEO_TS folders (and answer the question of someone just above about movie covers for MPEG4 files).

Nope, just VIDEO_TS folders. QuickLook is used for video files.

Yes, Front Row supports passthrough just like it did before.

cool -
well I guess with the preview.jpg cover art option; we're all set for library building as long as we can afford the disk space for all those video_ts folders!!

a few others that i cant think of names for right now.

centerstage is perfect for cataloging and organizing though, even at their current build. FAR better then any other app. being able to browse by genre, actor, director, etc.....frikin awesome

Any thoughts on using ATV plugins (such as Sapphire) with Leopard's Front Row. Could this work?

I rip all my dvd's as main feature only, is there anyway to switch audio tracks from front row?? On dvd's with DD and DTS I keep both tracks as some other locations in my network cannot play DTS. If not is there a way to rip only the main feature but keep just menu for audio switching?

So would a Preview.mov work as well -- if you download the trailer from Apple.com, for example?

Nah, I'd have to go with DVDPedia over CenterStage for cataloging. CenterStage isn't much good for anything but a punchline.

I'd just like to say that I have one problem with the new front row: There is no longer a "Resume" for movies (xvid/divx, etc.). I do a lot of torrenting and have a bunch of movies in this format and when I stop halfway in a movie and go do something else and then come back I can no longer "Resume" like the old front row could. Instead it just starts from the beginning. Very annoying but I think the problem is that it's not really using quicktime and iTunes like front row had before. Now front row is a sort of seperate operation. So if you play something in itunes, you can't start it back up at the same point in front row.

Maybe there is some way to fix this or they will update it later...but right now it's stupid that I have to fast forward to where I was before.

Other than that the new front row is MUCH faster. I have not had any problems playing anything (I have Perian but I thought perian doesnt work with leopard, maybe I'm wrong). Everything seems to work great. The only other thing I would have liked is if they had made it easier to add external movies to the movie folder. I have an external hard drive that has all my movies on it. I put an alias in my Movies folder but it's annoying having to click on Movies -> Movies -> Movies Alias to finally get to my movies. Would be nice if there was an easier way.

Anyway, that's about all I have to say. The Divx/Xvid movies don't look any better than the old front row. I was hoping with the new DVD player they could have also made the detailing on just regular .avi movies look better too. Oh well.

Haven't looked at DVD's yet but I will now that I remembered that the DVD player is better.

** Just like to add that putting Preview.jpg of the cover of a movie in the folder where your Divx/Xvid movies also WORKS, so it's not just video_ts folders. But it seems to show three different images. The Preview.jpg image, a still image of the first frame of the movie, and then I guess the stock image of a front row movie file (a movie reel). Don't know if there's a way to just have it show the Preview.jpg

It still uses Quicktime. Try uninstalling your quicktime extensions to confirm.

The DVD player is for DVD's and nothing else. It has absolutely no bearing on other formats. If you want better image quality, contact the makers of your quicktime extensions.

so what's up with it not allowing to resume?

and I guess it still uses quicktime if you say so...but what about itunes?

and I was mistaken, I thought the DVD player used some quicktime extensions that's why I was hoping other files might look better too. Sorry.

** above I said that if you put the preview.jpg in an xvid movie folder it will show that in front row. It does, but it just shows a thumbnail of each file in that folder. So as I said above, one was the Preview.jpg which is showed, then it showed the movie file (so the first frame of the movie), and then it showed a third which was the .srt file that was in that folder (and it just showed a front row movie reel image). So this doesn't really work that well so nevermind ha.

So it really isn't just a rumor then? VIDEO_TS support is in Front Row 2? (Still waiting on my copy... should be downloaded from corporate soon.)

Well DVD Assist, it was a fun ride while it lasted ;-)

Yep, I've got Leopard and Video_TS support is definitely in - I've been able to stream HD movies across from a Windows share and play them in Front Row.

The only problem I have with Front Row now is that you can't specify custom aspect ratios for HD movies - or at least I haven't found a way yet.

Funnily enough DVD Player now supports, and remembers, custom aspect ratios for Video_TS movies which it didn't do in Tiger, so maybe there still is a place for DVD Assist???
