I was all set to get an Apple TV for Christmas but having read about a few of its shortcomings have come to the conclusion that I'll be better off w/a Mac Mini.

I currently have an Oppo hooked up for dvd duty via DVI but am hoping to replace this w/the Mac Mini and hook the Oppo up to the kids set.

I also have a VGA connection.

Has anyone had any luck w/this panel and Macs?

Very reassuring - thanks!

What's the primary use for your Mini? - do you play DVD's through it?

I use it for photos, music and Video (DVDs ripped) and also as a web server for my pages, I found that apple dvd player for playing dvds is'nt doing good job. a 100$ upscaling DVD player does a better job.

OK - so as not to make a $6-700 mistake - I took the trouble to pull out my Oppo, unplug and test out the DVI connection.

The vga connection has trouble. I can get it to span the screen using 1024x768 but it's stretched and the dvd playback is also. I have the option to use 1360x768 and it's pretty close but there's some squashing.

The good news is that it picked up the dvi connection flawlessly and automatically adjusted to 1366x768.

I can't remember what model # the dvi blade is but I'm relieved - if I have the inclination I'll pull out the manual and post up the model # in the compatibility thread.
