So I'm also a major NEWB when it comes to projector/screen and sizing but I've been wandering the same types of things as the OP - I have about 8'8 of space from floor to ceiling... will I be dealing with the same issues?

Like the OP, I would like 1080p and 3D... not sure what else I need want other than a great picture at a great price. Right now I'm working on a $1500 budget for a PJ but I can save my money and get more if needs be. $3k is definitely my limit though.

What kind of projector should I be looking at?

Why should I be interested in a 2.35:1 ratio? What are its advantages?

Are masking systems an option or are they going to be ridiculous expensive?

Sorry if these questions are newb...

Over the OP's budget, but the Epson 5010 can be found for about $2600.

I'd much rather watch a great movie in B&W at 240 lines of resolution than a lousy movie in 1080p with lossless audio.
