I always chuckle at these threads but I'm bored tonight and would love to hear some input. I'm just finishing up my 2.35 setup and am kind of in a quandry on which way I want to go. I've found a nice anamorphic lens for about a grand to mate up with my JVS RS20. Part of me is thinking about going with the zoom method and upgrading the projector to say a new Epson 5010 or thereabouts.

In your opinion; which one do you think would offer the better presentation? I really like the idea of a lens, but would love a brighter pj as well. I don't care at all for 3d, so this has no bearing on my decision.

Thanks,
Travis

What A-Lens is it? Optics pending, you may be better off zooming.

In principle, I would say that upgrading your projector would give you more bang-for-your-buck than adding a lens.

However, other than 3D, which you've said you're not interested in, I'm not really sure how an Epson LCD could be considered an upgrade from a JVC D-ILA.

I was just throwing out one of many I've checked into. Truth be told, I'm sure I will stay in the JVC family for some time to come. I looked into an RS45, but didn't see enough improvement to justify upgrading.

The only thing I would like out of my RS20 would be a little more brightness. I'd love to have grabbed a 35 but wasn't in the cards at the time.

Order a Darblet from AVS. It won't actually make your picture brighter, but it helps a little with perceived contrast and detail. For less than $300, it's a great tweak.

The PANAMORPH FVX200 lens is a fixed in place lens and will not work with the Epson 5010. The FVX200ED works with the Epson 6010. Though once used to the native contrast of the JVC, it might be hard to switch.

What screen do you have now? A Da-lite high power might be an option to give you more brightness because you are right a RS45 wouldn't be enough of an upgrade from your RS20 if any to justify it. I have a 1.5 gain(although some have reported it measures closer to 1) 2.35 screen and I also have a 1.78 2.4 high power pull down screen. The gain difference between the 2 is very noticeable. I plan on upgrading my 2.35 screen to a bigger one and I will be getting the high power material for it for the added brightness.

Thanks guys, I'll look into the Darblet.

Screen is a 115" diag center stage XD. I'm really sold on having my speakers behind the screen with three towers for a front stage. Couldn't go back.

Well I decided to contribute some more to the economy and pick up the lens as well as the darblet. Also ordered another bulb for the 20. Better get the theater finished up quickly, lol.

What lens did you get? Also what is your throw distance?

I picked up the FVX200J. From the front of the A lens to the screen will be right at 18'. For a 105" wide screen that gives me a throw distance of 2.05 if I understand the math right. From what I read on Panamorphs website, this should put it in the sweet spot of the range. Yes?

Your lens throw ratio is 2.72 if using a 2.35 screen and 2.78 if using 2.40. 18' will work fine on a flat screen. Your pincushion will be a little over 1/4".

Thanks. Do you have the formula for calculating that? Apparently I'm using the wrong one. smile.gif

I'm glad that's all the amount of "barrel distortion" I'll get, as curved screens won't work with VC lenses.
