I just received my Panasonic AE8000. I chose it because of the lens memory as my goal is to move to 2.35 without an a-lens. I currently use a 133" 16:9 screen. I don't want to reduce my 16:9 picture, which means I would need a 166" diag (roughly 13' wide) 2.35 screen. I'm wondering if that is going to feel too big or too close.

My front row is 13.5' from the screen. The second row is on a 15" riser and sits almost 23' from the screen. The room is over 18' wide but the front half of the room has a closet housing the sump pump and general storage. So the front wall is only 15'5". Current throw is 16'3", but that is flexible.

Thoughts? Does anyone have a similar screen size and layout?

If you're keeping the same 1.85 size that you already have and enjoy, I doubt you'd have any visual issues with a wider version at the same screen height. That said, if you're getting close to the side walls, you might get a lot more objectionable reflections. If you've got fabric covered walls or acoustic panels, it would mitigate that concern.

Just test it. Tack up some white photographer backdrop paper on the sides of your existing screen and see what it feels like. (Or better, put a whole paper screen up so it's actually watchable...)

Testing is your friend in this regard.

Do a test run first before buying a new screen. Use white paper or what ever you have. When you zoom to achieve scope, the new 16:9 image (which includes the black bars) will now be 78% larger, so make sure you have the lumens to support this. Otherwise you should be good to go.

I love my Constant Image Height system!

Thanks all, the paper is a good idea. I've enlarged a 2.35 image but on my flat black walls it isn't very telling. The AE8000 is spec'd at 2400 lumens but projector central measured 2471 in dynamic. I've been watching it in Cinema 2 because I like the colors. That was measured at 1612 lumens, which is apparently too bright for me because I changed it to eco-mode and like it better. And my current screen is 1.0 gain, the 2.35 will likely be at least 1.1. So brightness shouldn't be a problem, but I now have some concern about reflection off the side walls as Jeff mentioned.

Dave - just scanned your build thread. Very nice all around build. I especially like the look/feel of the screen which is almost wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling. Is your theater now complete? I didn't see any pics of the final product.

Not yet, I am still yet to sort out my sub-woofer situation.
