I'm starting to look into the scaling options for the RS-1

Given the Gennum chip it has does the "usual suspect" list change a bit? Has anyone else on the RS-1 pre-order done some research on the various options?

I was thinking that having 1080i output is not so bad given the internal processor - so maybe the Key Digital (powerbuy) is the way to go. The price is certainly nice. Thoughts?

I know what you mean, especially since the next step up is about twice its price to 3k$ for the newest lumagen.

Two things are certain in life, death and expensive high-end projectors.

Yeah. Seems crazy to spend that much on a scaling device when the internal chip has so much capability. That's what kind of drives me crazy. So I'm thinking that feeding it the interlaced image isn't such a big deal since it can de-interlace it just fine. I guess the only trade-off is for any native 1080P devices.

Bad idea. Any scaler you are going to use for a CH setup is going to deinterlace the signal to progressive, scale it then reinterlace the signal back for a 1080i output. You would then be turning around and deinterlacing the signal once again in the RS-1. The critical deinterlacing is the first time it occurs. If the processor introduces deinterlacing errors there they are going to be in the rest of the chain.

If you are going to do CH with the RS-1 and want to just use the internal scaler you will have to do it with the zoom method of filling the 2.35 screen. If you add a lens you are going to need an appropriate external scaler. I'll be using a Lumagen HDP Pro. Since most of my sources are film or HD based the Lumagen's deinterlacing is fine. I'll just use the processing in the RS-1 for NR if it works OK for that.

I am in the same boat as well.

I hope that JVC will hear the calling and implement or activale the gennum VP to do the required stretch. It has the ability to do so, from what I understand.

Craig,

Does the keyDigital device do the required vertical stretch for 2.35? When I looked at it sometime ago, I wasnt sure.

My setup, still in progress:

Yeah, it does. Check this out: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=790055

From what sfogg says it might not be a good idea since it will get double scaled. But it seems to me that will happen no matter what? I need to research this more as I really don't understand the scaling end of things very well. I was actually thinking I might use an HTPC for now...

Thanks Allen I'll move over to that thread. We should probably close this one to avoid duplication.
