Thanks I was looking at getting these for my first speaker setup. Total package will cost ~$480 but probably more if I get hit with taxes at the border.

One thing I'm wondering is if these are enough to power a 19x17 room which will be my theater room when our next house is built. I'd be pairing it with a Onkyo NR-609 or 709 but haven't yet decided on a sub. If anyone has any experience with these speakers I'd appreciate your input.

I have the pioneer 1121-k, polk monitor 70's, CS2 center, monitor 40's for surround and 2Klipsch rw-12d subs. Nice for home theatre and ok for music. Definitely a great bang for the price. I ordered everything from Newegg. My living room is a little smaller than yours and this setup delivers more than enough power. I would encourage you look at the pioneer 1121-k. According to tests, it delivers the similar power at 5 channels and more at 7 channels when compared to to the Onkyo 809.

Are the Monitor70s compatible with most receivers?

Right now, I'm looking at a Yamaha rx-v667 (may well change), but would it be able to power the floorstanding speaker?

I'm completely new to HT setups, so any explanation is helpful :-P.

EDIT: Also, can (and should) two Monitor70s replace the front L/R speakers in a 7.1 setup? Otherwise, what would they replace/supplement?

actually, Monitor70's are one of Polk's more efficient speakers with a sensitivity of 90dB. A V667 will drive them just fine to level's that would be very uncomfortable.

Absolutely, the Monitor70's would be your front L and front R speakers, and hopefully you will get the CS2 for the center channel when your budget will allow. The 70's and CS2 make a really nice "front 3"....which carry about 90% of the soundtrack audio in 5.1 or 7.1 encoded movie audio.

Sweet! Thanks for the quick and helpful reply.

I'll probably be getting a 5.1 speaker package now to supplement it for a lower price. Maybe I'll eventually upgrade individually, but for now, I think the Monitor70s are a great improvement over front satellite speakers in a 7.1 setup.

wow, those black polk monitor 70s are now out of stock at newegg. (at least for now). I got a few to try and out and they are great. Anyone know if they've been out of stock before and come back? From what I gather they do not make these anymore.

it'll be back in stock.

They always have these sales for past few years.

ALso, they still manufacture these for sure. They stopped making the first series of the 70's but these are the newer models.

I have a feeling that polk makes these for their budget shoppers who want higher end. This way polk can get both the higher end market and lower end market.
