$799 after calling J&R. 33% off list isn't too bad.

Google Is showing the price at $749 again this afternoon. I did not call J&R to confirm.

The CS rep I spoke with claimed that was for an "old" link (when I called the last time it was at $750). Doesn't make sense since it changes daily.

Interesting how perception changes. MSRP is $1,199 and a price of $800 is good. But since it has fallen to below $700 in the past, we readjust our floor and anything at the $800 range seems "expensive".

But I still hold on for a $700 or $750 price :-)

You know what that means, don't you? It means it will be available for $599 in the next couple of days. smile.gif

I took the plunge last week on the refurbished 818 from A4less. Wanted to hold off for price drop when new models arrived, but couldn't wait. The A4less return policy isn't the best, so fingers crossed that I don't get a dud.

When you get it, please post. I am used to factory refurbs seeming basically new, but let us know what you get.

Good luck. I bought it from J&R. After I updated the firmware, the receiver would grab an IP address, but do nothing network related.

I went through a series of dud Denon 3313s with A4Less, and found that they have been courteous to deal with, but firmly within the stated return guidelines. The first receiver conked during a firmware update, and the replacement from Denon developed video dropouts in days. Since even the replacement receiver from Denon for the defective refurb from A4Less, I had A4Less make an exception for the 30-day return window, and they sorted everything out with Denon for the return. They would not however pay for the return shipping, and instead had me call Denon to pay for return shipping on the defective replacement. Denon did take care of the shipping, so I only lost the initial shipping costs to me.

Having said that, I got my Onkyo 818 for 749 from J&R when they were honoring the Google Shopping price. I feel that the replacement for the 818 will be out in the next couple of months, so prices will only go down from here. The replacement might or might not have MultiEQ XT32, but might include native support for 4K, for whatever it is worth. So, I'd recommend waiting a month or so if you could to save some money.

Can anyone comment on how the 818 compares to the Pioneer SC-1522-K. I've been waiting for the price to drop into the $600 range but am tired of holding my breath and the sc-1522-k is $599 right now.

Thanks

I also believe it will be good to wait at least a few weeks becasue I'm starting to see specials from Onkyo, Yamaha and Pioneer at the same time, and with some new releases around the corner the best is yet to come.

Thanks

I'd get the Pioneer over the Onkyo even at the same price.

I would like to know your opinion as well. Either I'm using the search tool wrong or there is just very little information on this receiver.

There is an official thread for the Pioneer SC-1522-K just like most receivers. Here is a link, hope it helps.

Wrong thread. Look for the SC-65 thread.

I'm caught between the 881 and the SC65. What a dilemma. I suppose price will become the issue.

I didn't see anyone ask about the sc65. If I made a mistake I apologize.

You linked to the 1222 thread instead of the 1522 (the one on sale). IIRC, they are saying the SC-65 is the Elite equivalent of this model, so the info would be in the SC-65 thread.

I'm soured by the quality and support of Onkyo products. I fell into the trap of buying one because it was so much cheaper than a comparable unit from a quality manufacturer and figured that how bad could it be if its just used for a secondary system? The thing put out more heat that a baseboard heater until it stopped working altogether. Luckily it failed so fast that I was still within the return period.

With all the problems reported on the lower end models, I probably wouldn't want to take the gamble of throwing down some serious cash on a higher end Onkyo - might as well spend a bit more and move up to a better quality manufacturer IMHO. If it was my $750+, i'd go with a better manufacturer even if they didn't cram in as many features (most of which I always think I 'need' then end up not using).

A 350ci v8 gets hotter than a 4 cylinder.

If it is within engineering specs who cares. I've used onkyo is for close to a decade now without a single problem. They get hot for the same reason they are heavier than their competitors. They typically have a stronger more powerful amp section which requires more power and generates more heat.

But I think conversations like this help us to not only know that the deals are, but if they are indeed a deal as well.
