If you have a network receiver, Blu-Ray player, a media server or any networkable component a hardwired connection is better than wireless. If you have no available Ethernet ports on your router, adding a switch gets you some more.

more ports (one replaces a port already in use, and another is required for the uplink) so an eight port switch gets you six
Usually an eight port switch is $10-20 more than a five port switch - twice as many ports for considerably less than twice as much money, but this price is even less than a five port switch.
