This amp looks very nearly like my Crown XLS-5000. It's a beast. If you've got a DIY project or otherwise need a very powerful 3u battle tank amp -- this might be a great ticket.

This amp would be mated well to push a couple passive JTR Captivators or possibly some other monster drivers like the LMS-5400 drivers. (though I don't know where the rolloff occurs on the amp).

Good to see big iron options still exist on the cheap. I wonder how accurate the 5-50khz +/- 3db is?

I bought two of these, when I found out the boys at marathon don't reply to emails, pick and choose what they reply to, and basically refuse to allow you to buy parts. I took them for a run on my homemade quad bass boxes. Got 4 alpine swr 10d4 per side and one cv 5000 hooked up to each 4 subwoofers in mono on 8ohms load. They power them really nice, and way more solid bass than my marathon ma 5050s gave me. The cerwin bass was tight and low, the marathon bass was low and loose.

Looking under the hood I could see why the cerwin vega cv 5000 was drowning out the marathon ma 5050. The cerwin has a massive toroidal transformer which is probably why it is 30 pounds heavier than the marathon. The cerwin has 24 smoothing capacitors, at 15000 uf each, the marathon only has 12 caps at 10000 each. The marathon just doesn't have the power supply to provide the same bass output the cerwin cv 5000 can do.

I immediately bought two more cv 5000s after seeing what they can do. and that I could no doubt trust cerwin vega more if I ever need parts or replacement. The three year warranty is cool too. I highly advise picking these up. The Marathon MA 5050 are retired. Maybe use for tops some day but bass performance is out!! No need to use the low cutoff with the cerwin vega cv 5000 SUC51175.JPG 2549k .JPG file

A Good amplifier requires a adequate power supply, It does not matter what the amplifier is capable of if the power supply will not provide the power required. Most amplifiers have under rated power supplies. It is up to you to make sure you get the ones that are
least under rated if at all.

The funny thing about the world is everyone complains about censorship, but everyone runs to it when it comes to damage control. I wish all a good experience on the forums. A few more pics of the cv 5000

johnplayerson, I stumbled on this forum doing research on the ma5050. I was ready to pull the trigger when I saw the interesting info u put up about the CV5000. I also saw the thread of you post in the speaker plans forum and I agree that you were unfairly treated like a punk kid because you were using car speakers with PA amps. Anyways, I was thinking of using two of these bad boys to power 4 jl 13w7. I built my own version of the jl gotham. Do you think these amps will handle the 3 ohm load well?

I was on vacation for a while. I would not recommend anything under 4 ohm load on any amplifier even if they are rated to it. The JL audio are fantastic woofer but I would recommend you
power them at 6 ohm load. IE. wiring to get the ohms up. I use dual four ohm coils all the time, and either use 8 ohm load , or wire to 8 ohms. The four alpines I use are wired in series to give me
an 8 ohm load. Then using the cv 5000 in bridged mode, (technically 4 ohms per side) I get 8 ohm load bridged.

There really isn't much need to go under in the ohms. I am positive you will blow your mind with the sound quality and punch wiring the pairs to 6 ohms and then using each amp to power the two.

Wish you were close as I would love to hear it. My new subs are the Rockford fosgate t2s , Do they ever sound good in the house lol.

Why do you say nothing less than four ohm? I can see it for DJ use but for home theater use two ohm per channel works great imo. I've been using a crown xls5000 in two ohm stereo on a pair of JTR captivator pros for about a year now and I've never even felt the amp begin to get warm even with extended demo sessions at reference levels.

Check the other threads, I posted more good information that's nice to know about this amplifier and two of its identical cousins. I love top of the line equipment, and even
many name brand top of the line, but I must say using pro amplifers with car audio subs will blow away those veledyne dd subs that they have the nerve to charge
you 4000.00 for ONE!!!!.

Nothing wrong with using these pro amps for bass. Most pro amps are rated distortion at .1 percent vs home audio top of the line at .03 to .003, However most of your
distortion is always in the high end not the low end, so you get nice clean solid bass.

The cv 5000 is using the same output transistor as crown, qsc, the 2sc5200 and 2sc1943s

A Good amplifier requires a adequate power supply, It does not matter what the amplifier is capable of if the power supply will not provide the power required. Most amplifiers have under rated power supplies. It is up to you to make sure you get the ones that are

Archea, You can use 2 ohm if you like but its much harder on your amplifiers, and I like mine to last 20 years. 2 ohm loading is one of the necessary evils of car audio due to low voltage.
In the home you have no limit on the circuit. you can hook up 20 amp and 30 amp lines, so there is no need to stress out your amplifier for nothing. Plenty of output can be achieved at 8 ohms.

Guitar center has $75 off it right now for mother's day.

$800- $75 = $725

If you wait until the next big holiday - both musician's friend and guitar center usually have 15% off coupons.

Memorial Day will be the next 15% off coupon most likely.

Sonic fibre apparently has best offer available on their internet site for this amp. Check the other threads. Quite a few recommending them now.

15% off at Guitar Center is back. When you are on the product page you can click "request online code" and a CSR will generate one for you.

As for the fan mod- it seems the best solution is to buy two quiet 12v fans and run them in series off of one fan header.

This model coolermaster fan works great with the unit. wire in series to ONE fan connector. Series wiring means, join plus and minus of the fans together, then hook up the
negetive lead of one fan and positive lead of the other fan to the fan power.

The unit actually has quit a few more fan connectors, but there is only one 24 volt dc power supply running them all.

Any idea why these fans don't work? I'd hate to have to buy another set if I didn't need to.

BTW- the wires on these fans are not marked, but I've tried every combination, assuming the middle wire is 12v.

Edit- well, I guess I'll just buy a couple of those known-working Coolermaster fans.

Okay- I just got in a pair of these fans, and they do work great.

I don't know why I tried to reinvent the wheel by buying those other fans. Oh well. These work great, and were pretty cheap. They also push a decent amount of air for being so quiet. I will actually be able to start using the amp now. The stock fans were so loud that I didn't even bother using the thing.

Thanks for the useful info, johnplayerson.
